This has and will always be a logistical hurdle with the point-to-point (human) transport You're probably gonna have to land many miles offshore and then take a boat to your destination
Chris Retford@ChrisRetford

@DrChrisCombs Where will the New York Spaceport be? How far offshore? How long will the ferry ride be?

@cybergibbons Haven't seen one in the real world, it was a significant-and-tedious metaphor in some college literature class (maybe something by kafka?) I had to dig a bit at the time to learn that they weren't merely fictional, and that they were in fact still killing people...

@nuclearlighter since there are fewer color ones, they're probably wrong, so you need to bleach them :-)

I'm sitting in the server room right now, listening to Bad Sector and thinking how to solve THIS. What would you do in my place? Wrong answers only.

@freebsdfrau (I recognized it because I have a Neuton - and was just collecting the old dead gelcels for recycling. You're right, the new 40V systems are over the top - not quite to snowblower levels yet, but impressive.)

@eichin Perhaps — all I know is that Ryobi now has 40V batteries for mowers and it’s mind blowing to me (probably should not be but is)

@shava23 I haven't seen anyone order it, but Ocho Café in Westford (basically inside 495 halfway from 2 to 3) has "top shelf guacamole - made fresh at your table" as literally the first item on their appetizer menu ochocafe.com/wp-content/upl…

@jennmueng @levelsio What if you change the format? Less places than a coworking, a real coffee shop with fantastic coffee. You add a smaller than a coworking subscription fee, but make it more on the coffee shop and food side. No coworking has full kitchen btw.

On Lex Fridman's podcast, @levelsio mentioned how restrictions on coworking in coffeeshops are becoming increasingly limiting. I think someone should build a comfortable, next-level coffee shop/coworking space. It would offer tasty food, great coffee, and lightning-fast internet, with cozy seating options. I'm sure people would be willing to pay a small monthly subscription for some extra perks. Plus, just by serving someone 2-3 meals a day, along with coffee and desserts, you could see a decent ROI.

@Mugski @DJSnM I've heard there was a deleted scene covering exactly that - not just interfacing, but that the entire computer industry was boosted by reverse-engineered alien tech...

@DJSnM Thinking about it again, Area 57 had 40 years to study the captured alien space ship. Perhaps they had worked out a way to interface to the alien systems? Levinson then used already created libraries to create his programs.

@lzsthw ... mkfifo makes named pipes, which *aren't* unix domain sockets, which is why you can just open() them, instead of needing connect()... What *might* work is (while true; ffmpeg -i - ...) < /tmp/ffout.unix so a crashing ffmpeg doesn't ever close the fifo, so the writer stays up?

My last experiment with streaming using ffmpeg I tried to use multiple processes so that one could crash but it'll keep going, and it mostly works. Here's the scripts, but some things I can't figure out: 1. It relies on unix sockets, and contrary to the docs, you just run mkfifo and don't tell ffmpeg it's a unix:/ socket. 2. Using this is supposed to work on Windows now, but I'm not sure how to make an AF_UNIX socket from the command line. You can do it with code though. 3. It properly waits for the stream to be received in test4, and the test4a and test4b scripts to wait until they start receiving, so it's reliable with timing. As long as the sockets are made ahead of time they should all wait and sync up. 4. If one of the endpoints dies then the other keeps going, _HOWEVER_ there's no way to restart the failed endpoint because ffmpeg in test4 stops writing when it does. 5. To make it work you'd need a way to tell ffmpeg to keep going in test4 even if the output is closed, but I can't find it. Something like "treat this output like a server and don't close it." 6. This is also how it works when you use the all-in-one script (img2) so if say twitter closes then youtube will keep going internally. 7. This means the only advantage to this multi-process setup is that you get more CPU/GPU utilization with multiple processes. Otherwise it's not much more robust and probably less robust.

@tomgauld I appreciate the refinement of the final result - but I *adore* the sketchbook page, and the amount of implied worldbuilding. (And yet it is still focused: this is "fury road bookmobiles" and at the same time it is *not* "mortal engines but only libraries" :-)
