hard to believe, Edward Hopper drew this at the age of nine. already his eye was astute--most children don't seem to "see" figures anything like this; indeed, most adults, asked to draw a human figure, fail utterly. how odd it is that some are naturally gifted with this ability to "see" & to replicate it with a pencil or pen. even the proportions of this child-body seem accurate, & the suggestion of the water is deft, minimal, like the clouds. nine years old!
