Will Wright's genius was noticeable early on. Raid on Bungeling Bay is a 1984 classic where you pilot a helicopter in a top-down view across a large open map in Bungeling Bay, launching from a carrier. Your mission: destroy six enemy factories building a doomsday war machine for the evil Bungeling Empire. You bomb targets, fight tanks, planes, ships, and radar installations while managing limited bombs (which can always be replenished at base). It had a pretty "open world" feel to it, within the context of the year and the technical limitations of hardware and software. Wright apparently had more fun designing the maps than the action part of the game, so he did a full 180 and later gave us Sim City, Sim Earth, Sim Ant, Sim Life, Sim City 2000, Sim Copter, The Sims - and Spore. Wright's games have probably been played by everyone who ever touched a computer.
