A dangerous narrative being peddled is the notion that a nuclear war is winnable. The rationale is that Russia’s nuclear arsenal is vastly depleted and unreliable. According to some analysts, only their ballistic missile submarines work. Consequently, with a combination of THAAD, Patriot, and other systems, it may be possible to defeat a Russian nuclear strike in the same way that Iran’s missile attack against Israel was nullified. This bonkers theory acknowledges that a dozen or more missiles might hit their targets. There is no reliable data on how many atomic detonations would be sufficient to destroy civilisation as we know it, but even a dozen would be enough to create a lethal fallout cloud that would be at the mercy of the winds. In short, no one wins a nuclear war. No one.
