Bottom line: Thank God for baseload energy made up of fossil fuels. Had our grid been more reliant on the wind turbines that froze, the outages would have been much worse.

With electricity blackouts across Texas, many are wondering: what happened? How does the energy capital of the United States run out of power? Here’s what happened. THREAD

I'm talking at @MakeGamesSA's JHB meetup this month (today!) about how I'm abusing @unity3d's Tilemap to create an old-school style console renderer. Playing with random colours and glyps make for some interesting spreads.

@LazyGameDevZA Oooh so that is exactly it. You know me so well. 😂 The pretty one leads to higher understanding. The ugly one is just...what the heck am I looking at?

@eldevilliers I've previously found that the "ugly" high performance code showed more clearly how the data is transforming, which lead to a whole different domain language of the process. As soon as that language is then incorporated into the code it suddenly became so beautiful.

So the pretty code is 40% slower than the ugly code. The pretty code uses the nice library interface. And it's only 2.3 seconds slower for 100mil operations. But the speed demon inside me is growling. *sigh*

If you understand the importance of flow in s/w dev, #mobprogramming makes complete sense. Experienced an awesome example of that again today.

Meetings were "architects" start speaking about technical details without having put in any time to even sit and put their great idea into practice. Surely the discussion should be focusing on the problem domain?

@GailOllis Thank a million Gail. Your talk was exactly what I needed, and provided an excellent starting point to tackle a bunch of problems. Putting a session together and will let you know the outcome!

Bumped into another personal hero today, @Grady_Booch . And I was blown away by his kindness and sincere interest. He is one of the thought leaders of our industry, yet remained incredibly humble. So perhaps unknowingly he taught me more about empathy today. Thank You Grady!
