This is unreal: "As tensions escalated, one U.S. official went so far as to invoke the Avignon Papacy, the period in the 1300s when the French Crown leveraged its military power to dominate the papal authority. The Department of Defense and the Nunciature did not respond to requests for comment."
Mattia Ferraresi@mattiaferraresi

The Trump administration summoned a Vatican diplomat to the Pentagon, and during the tense meeting a U.S. official invoked the Avignon Papacy. On July 4, the American pope will be in Lampedusa -- he didn't pick that date by accident. @TheFP thefp.com/p/why-the-vati…

I urge everyone to accompany this moment of delicate diplomacy with prayer, in hopes that a willingness to dialogue may become the means to resolve other conflict situations in the world as well. #PrayTogether #Peace

"America," Hegseth's underlings told the cardinal, "has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world. The Catholic Church had better take its side." As tempers rose, one US official reached for a 14th century weapon and invoked the Avignon Papacy ... This is nuts. 🧵
Christopher Hale@ChristopherHale

NEW: A stunning new report claims that the Pentagon summoned Pope Leo XIV’s top American diplomat and threatened him after the U.S.-born pontiff gave his January state-of-the-world address. Leo used the address to denounce a world ruled by “a diplomacy based on force” and “zeal for war.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-pentagon…

@cremieuxrecueil @LinkofSunshine The fundraisers for Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation called me an asshole in front of my small children for ignoring them at the grocery store. $300k of their $5 million in revenue went to autism awareness, the rest they gave themselves and their paid street harassers.

@cremieuxrecueil @LinkofSunshine I got a grant from them to run a free-tax prep program for seniors for years. They also fund early child ed and healthcare access programs. I don't love donor-dependent NGOs providing services like this instead of more stable gov programs, but they do aa good a job as any other.

The fake charities like the United/American Breast Cancer Foundation or Cancer Fund of America need to be criminalized so badly The management pays themselves almost half, almost half goes to the fake volunteers, and like 5% gets donated to real causes. A billion dollar scam

For those hoping for a last minute 25th amendment, or Congressional action today: I’d remind you that the VP is currently in Hungary campaigning for a Putin ally, and is not present to convene the US cabinet. And Congress stands in recess. The guardrails are off.

I feel sick to my stomach waiting around today to see what atrocity Trump has in mind for the people of Iran this evening. It's hard to fathom that our other elected leaders aren't able to check him in any meaningful way. It's really an indictment not just of the electorate but of our whole system of government. We're ruled by a mad king.

@HPluckrose To be clear, I think safe and affordable childcare should be available because it’s good for kids, and families (women) shouldn’t have to labor 7 days a week. Institutional care has been a part of this for over 100 years, it’s just newly subsidized for lower paid workers.

@ellim992 Yep, I was able to do this too. My best friend and I worked around each other & our two girls grew up like siblings. Then I could work weekends and some evenings when my husband was home.

My grandma was a nurse in an urban hospital in the late 50s-60s. She traded childcare among her coworkers, the woman with the day off watched all the kids. These arrangements still exist, but Twitter discourse is mostly upper middle class people who pay for professional care or

It's just really not that difficult. Women have been managing to have children & jobs for a long time using a combination of a competent partner, family, reciprocal childcare with friends & not going into purity spirals about things like 'sleep training.' 1/

@NinaPanickssery @JohnBowen124109 Boomers/Jones aging in place in priced out areas their kids can’t live in. Then of the half that do, add many still working, some too frail, you’re left with a small number where that’s even possible. I agree, we need solutions and we have needed them for 50+ years.

@NinaPanickssery @JohnBowen124109 We’ve got survey data saying that less than half of children live “near” one grandparent. It’s becoming more and more common over the last 50 and especially last 30 years for people to live farther from where they grew up.

Genuinely curious—why don’t more people use their own parents/kid’s grandparents for childcare as opposed to daycare/preschool/nannies (which seem more common)? Is it common for boomer grandparents to show disinterest in their grandchildren?
