Karnataka is the second driest state after Rajasthan and drought prone. Yet between 2016 and 2023, the area for the water guzzling sugarcane doubled from 3.7 lakh hectares in 2016 to 6.9 lakh hectares. ~20 million litres of water is required per hectare for sugarcane. That is ~14 trillion litres of water = 490 TMC. To put in perspective, Kaveri river has ~740 TMC in a good monsoon. Karnataka’s share is ~285 TMC. It’s madness to encourage ethanol production.

My mom forgot her keys in an auto a couple of days ago. The driver (Mohammad Waseem) called after a few hours saying he had them. Today, he called again and asked us to pay ₹300 if we want them back, and he shared a shop location near Koti for pickup. While expecting something in return for helping is understandable, I felt uncomfortable with the location he shared. Don't know if it was intentional or not but Not good.
