ON THIS DAY: 170 years ago, Necropolis station opened with the sole purpose of transporting the dead and funeral parties to Brookwood Cemetery as London's cemeteries filled up. Waterloo's expansion swallowed this original site in 1902, Necropolis moving south in consequence.
