🇫🇷 Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France’s left-wing La France Insoumise, announced today (Sunday) he will run for president in 2027, his fourth bid for the office. “Yes, I am a candidate,” the 74-year-old told TF1. With President Emmanuel Macron term-limited and far right candidate Marine Le Pen facing a five-year ban from public office over EU funds embezzlement (currently under appeal), the race is increasingly open. Mélenchon narrowly missed the 2022 runoff by 1.2 points. On domestic policy, he pledges to replace the Fifth Republic with a “Sixth Republic” by convening a constituent assembly, and employing citizen-initiated and recall referendums as the two major tools of “popular intervention.” On foreign policy, he is a vocal critic of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and also backs Spain’s stance against the U.S.-Israel war on Iran. He advocates for a non-aligned France guided by international law, withdrawal from NATO, an arms embargo on Israel, and suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement. “Israel’s economy cannot survive without Europe,” he said today. Elections are set to take place in April next year.

Ben Rhodes, who will be involved in the group along with Jake Sullivan, said the group's "two most interesting projects to think about are the pipeline of people who might work on campaigns and populate a Democratic administration, and then the ideas that can form a progressive or Democratic foreign policy going forward." (Axios) Jake Sullivan, a co-founder of the group, was a key architect of President Biden’s Israel-Palestine policy that involved continuing to supply Israel with heavy bombs and munitions throughout the genocide — even as Israel continued to indiscriminately bomb schools and areas it designated as “safe” and ordered Palestinians to move to, imposed a months-long total siege on Gaza that drove catastrophic hunger—including an official UN-backed monitor declaring famine in the territory—causing scores of innocent civilians, including children, to starve to death.

🫏 Senior Democrats are reviving the foreign policy group National Security Action, co-founded by Jake Sullivan and Ben Rhodes, ahead of the 2028 race, Axios reports, naming Maher Bitar, a Palestinian-American, to lead the effort. 🔹The group aims to shape Democratic foreign policy and build a pipeline of staff for a future administration, according to Axios. 🔹Bitar served on President Biden’s National Security Council before leaving in 2023 to work for Adam Schiff. 🔹Sullivan, who later became President Biden’s national security adviser and was a key architect of U.S. policy backing Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and Rhodes, a former top Obama foreign policy aide who has described the war as a genocide, remain involved as the party faces deep internal divisions, especially over Israel. The party’s foreign policy direction is now described as “wide open.”

Abdul El-Sayed: “AIPAC and Israel are not the same as Judaism and the Jewish people. I love Judaism and I love the Jewish people. The single most dangerous thing they’ve tried to tell us is somehow they can extend the definition of antisemitism to include a foreign government and its leaders. I call bullshit”

🇱🇧💢 LEBANON | Israeli Forces Continue Killings Across Southern Lebanon on Sunday, Strike Mosque and Restaurant, Confirm Damage to Monastery A drone strike on a mosque in Sammaaiyeh, southeast of Sour (Tyre), killed three people overnight. A separate strike on the al-Oustoura restaurant and a neighboring pharmacy in Arab Salim, in the Nabatieh district, killed two people and triggered explosions and fire from gas cylinders on the premises, L’Orient Today reported. In the Bint Jbeil district, a drone strike on a moped in Haris killed one person, while a strike on Srifa wounded four rescue workers from the Islamic Health Committee. Israeli forces also issued evacuation orders for 11 villages this morning, prompting residents to flee the Nabatieh and Zahrani areas, journalist Courtney Bonneau reports from Nabatieh. Artillery and airstrikes were reported across dozens of locations including Jibsheet, Khiam, Srifa, Zawtar al-Sharqieh, Qseibeh, Kfar Dounin, Mansouri, Mayfadoun, Blat, Wadi Berghoz, and a tourist complex between Jarjou and Arab Salim, per local media. Israel’s military also confirmed it “damaged a religious building” in Yaroun – a Christian monastery and a convent school. 🎥 Bonneau reports from Nabatieh - the site of multiple massacres of civilians in the past 24 hours ⬇️

🔴 IDF West Bank Commander Admits Two-Tiered Use of Force The head of IDF Central Command told a closed briefing that Israeli forces have been “killing [Palestinians] at a scale not seen since 1967,” Haaretz reports. The commander, a rightwing settler himself, also said soldiers cannot shoot Jewish stone-throwers due to “sociological consequences.” Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth separately acknowledged, in Israeli media reporting cited by reporter Jasper Nathaniel, that the military applies discriminatory enforcement to Palestinian and Israeli stone-throwers in the West Bank, permitting far greater use of live fire against Palestinians, including shooting “at the knee and below” in some cases. “I’m not sure that opening fire on every Israeli stone-thrower… would help,” he said.

Update: The IDF's West Bank chief admits that soldiers are permitted to shoot Palestinian stone-throwers, but not Israelis: "I'm not sure that opening fire on every Israeli stone-thrower... would help."

The UK has seen weekly large-scale pro-Palestinian demonstrations calling for an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and to British complicity in Israeli crimes. The marches are opposed by the government and some in the UK Jewish community, who argue they create a climate of “antisemitism” and public intimidation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently suggested the “cumulative effect” of the protests could justify temporary bans. Reporter Owen Jones spoke to LBC about the criticism of the protests. @owenjonesjourno | @LBC

⭕️ Graham Platner, the progressive Maine Democrat running for Senate, says he doesn’t yet have an answer on whether he will appear on Tucker Carlson’s show after Carlson expressed interest in a meeting in an interview with the New York Times. “It’s hard to tell if [his shift] is real or if it’s a performance,” Platner told journalist David Sirota, but acknowledged areas of real alignment, especially foreign policy and the war on Iran. “Are we exposing new people to Tucker Carlson, or are we exposing people that listen to Tucker Carlson to us — that’s the math equation,” Platner deliberated out loud. Platner added: “He came out and said he was against the war on Iran on moral grounds. That’s a stronger statement on the war than a lot of sitting Democrats. And I of course am also opposed to the war on Iran on moral grounds.”
David Sirota@davidsirota

I just spoke with @GrahamForMaine about Tucker Carlson telling the NY Times' @LuluGNavarro he wants to meet Platner. I asked Platner if he'd appear on Tucker's show - and how he thinks about engaging with conservative media. Full interview will be on The Lever's YouTube page.

🚨 A senior Iranian official told Drop Site’s Jeremy Scahill that Iran rejects any attempt to alter “current conditions” in the Strait of Hormuz and will respond forcefully to President Trump’s so-called “Project Freedom.” The official said: ➤ “Any commercial vessel attempting to transit through designated restricted routes without prior coordination will be promptly intercepted by Iranian forces. Should U.S. military vessels respond, such actions would be met with an immediate and corresponding response from Iran.” ➤ “The U.S. military vessels are far from the corridor area. If commercial vessels attempt to move, they would be engaged well before reaching any American ships.” ➤ Trump’s action “is primarily intended to provoke Iran into taking an initial step toward confrontation, thereby creating a pretext for escalation and enabling him to justify further military action in response to an Iranian initiative.” ➤ “Trump has effectively turned them into bargaining tools in his political game,” referring to the roughly 2,000 vessels stuck west of the Strait of Hormuz that the U.S. President announced today he would help exit the crossing.

🚨Iran Warns Trump Against Any U.S. Military Action in the Strait of Hormuz In response to President Trump’s announcement the US plans to “guide” merchant ships out of the Strait of Hormuz, in an operation CENTCOM says will involve guided-missile destroyers and 15,000 service members, a senior Iranian official told @DropSiteNews that Iran’s leadership rejects any attempt to alter “current conditions” in the Strait and will respond forcefully. Trump’s action “is primarily intended to provoke Iran into taking an initial step toward confrontation, thereby creating a pretext for escalation and enabling him to justify further military action in response to an Iranian initiative,” the Iranian official said. “Our definitive position is that any commercial vessel attempting to transit through designated restricted routes without prior coordination will be promptly intercepted by Iranian forces. Should U.S. military vessels respond, such actions would be met with an immediate and corresponding response from Iran.” "The U.S. military vessels are far from the corridor area. Huckabee also spread another common but important lie when he claimed today that Tucker and others ignore "the massacre and mutilation of 1200 women, babies, and elderly people butchered by Hamas on October 7." Many killed on Oct 7 in Israel were not civilians at all. The death toll included well over 300 active-duty soldiers: legitimate military targets, including from Hamas attacks on military bases. The number of civilians killed is closer to 700. And many of those 700 Israeli civilians were killed not by Hamas but the IDF, which invoked "The Hannibal Directive," whereby the IDF knowingly kills its own citizens to prevent them from being taken hostage. They shot up and even firebombed homes where they knew Israeli civilians were. Again, none of this is to claim that Hamas and Oct 7 are more or less this or that. The point is that lies shouldn't be permitted to stand (if someone claimed that 12,533 people died on 9/11, or 8,200 dead at Pearl Harbor, one would and should correct it without being accused of mitigating those events). There were not innocent errors or "fog of war" confusion. They were spread deliberately with the narrative-building goal of turning October 7 attackers into unprecedented, never-before-seen monsters, "worse than ISIS" as Netanyahu called them. That Mike Huckabee still repeats all of this 3 years later is malice and madness.

not only the beheaded babies, also rape of women in front of their children. debunked.
Glenn Greenwald@ggreenwald

Oh, wow: I genuinely didn't realize there were any people left who still believe the long-debunked and twisted lie that Hamas, on October 7, beheaded babies, but apparently there are some still who believe it (or pretend to), and one of them is the US Ambassador to Israel @GovMikeHuckabee. A total of 1 baby was killed on Oct 7 (10-month-old Mila Cohen). She wasn't beheaded, nor baked in an oven, nor cut out of her mother's womb. Nobody died in those ways. Those were demented lies invented by Israeli officials and endlessly circulated by western media (and, in the case of the "beheaded babies" fabrication, affirmed by Joe Biden who, in Israel, falsely claimed he saw videos of it). The one baby who was killed on Oct 7 was shot with her family. This doesn't mean October 7 was any less this or any more that. It's not about mitigating this or defending that. It's simply about truth. What all this does mean is that multiple now-debunked lies were told on purpose about Oct 7 and people, especially with high positions in government like Mike Huckabee, should stop repeating those lies as if they're true. Debunking lies about wars and events that provoke wars is a vital function of journalists, historians, and anyone who cares about truth.
