In the few years I have been in business, we’ve had at least 20 staff try to start competing brands while still working at So Fresh, or shortly after leaving. Some formed teams of 2 to 4, others went solo. One particular person, while still in employment and holding a very senior role, even stole equipment to set up shop (na police settled the matter). I remember another one in the early days from customer service, who began diverting customers to her own business while still in full employment. But honestly, I’ve never sweated any of it. They’ve all fizzled out. Everyone sees the top-line revenue, say an outlet makes ₦10 million a month, and they immediately think, “If I can just make ₦2 million a month, I should at least be able to pay myself ₦1 million 😂😂.” It always feels easy to pull off. What they miss is that business is beyond just trading. What really keeps it going are the systems, the structures, the discipline, and the back-end operations. Many don’t even pause to study or understudy these. They just see the figures and think it's plug-and-play. Of course, people will join, leave, and start their own businesses; that's normal. But it should always be done ethically and transparently. So, when a mentee told me this evening that a senior staff just floated a similar company while still in employment, I just laughed. Of course it’s unethical, dishonest, and wrong. If you want to pursue your own dreams, then resign first. I told him to calm down, fire the person, and just move on like nothing happened. To every entrepreneur reading this: Don’t stress yourself when this happens. Don’t internalize it or assume you must be doing something wrong. Many times, it’s not about you at all. It says more about the character, values, and mindset of the person leaving than it does about your leadership. Keep building. Keep doing the right thing. The real test of a venture isn’t in the idea, it’s in the long haul.
