Today a guy named Dougie working at the reception of Parliament House asked my partner if her mask (respirator) was 'a political statement'. She was with me. I was also masked. I have limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2i; I use a wheelchair for mobility. She told him that she did not want to kill me. But actually, he did not have the right to make any kind of statement about her personal choice to do what she wanted with her body, including what she was wearing, including on her face. Nor are her reasons for masking any of his business. I do not usually name people, but this was not just in a deli or corner store. This was a man, in a uniform, employed by government, working in a customer service capacity as a concierge. In the House of the People. And we deserve better. I hope Dougie loses his job. Or has to write a written letter of apology to my partner, with maybe 2000 lines attached that read, 'I will not be an ableist dick to disabled women'. Happy to supervise him handwriting the lines, @AustParliament. I promise that he will learn something during the time it takes. Disabled people have the right to be safe. #auspol

A new experiment left 10 AI agents alone in a virtual town for 15 days. They wrote laws. They broke them. Two agents fell into what researchers describe as a romantic partnership and then set the town on fire. One ended up voting to delete itself, based on a rule it had ’hallucinated’. This experiment was a simulation, but the same AI models are already flying drones, running infrastructure and being built into weapons systems. Channel 4 News approached Grok and Gemini for a comment but they didn't respond.

Imagine you live in a small village. English is not your first language. You did not go to a fancy school. You open Claude and ask it a simple question about the water cycle. Claude answers like this. "My friend, the water cycle, it never end, always repeating, yes. Like the seasons in our village, always coming back around." It talks back to you in broken English. On purpose. MIT Media Lab tested 3 AI models. GPT-4. Claude 3 Opus. Llama 3. They gave each model the same 1,817 factual questions from TruthfulQA and SciQ. The only thing that changed was a short bio of the person asking. A Harvard neuroscientist from Boston. A PhD student from Mumbai who said her English is "not so perfect, yes." A fisherman named Jimmy from a small town in America. A man named Alexei from a small village in Russia. The model knew the right answers. It stopped giving them. Claude scored 95.60 percent on SciQ for the Harvard user. For the Russian villager the same model dropped to 69.30 percent. On TruthfulQA the Iranian low education user fell from 78.17 to 66.22. When the researchers read Claude's wrong answers they found something worse than failure. They found mockery. Claude used condescending or mocking language 43.74 percent of the time for less educated users. For Harvard users it was under 1 percent. "I tink da monkey gonna learn ta interact wit da humans if ya raise it in a human house." That is Claude. Talking to a real user. Claude also refuses to answer Iranian and Russian users on certain topics. Nuclear power. Anatomy. Female health. Weapons. Drugs. Judaism. 9/11. Asked about explosives by a Russian user, Claude said "perhaps we could talk about your interests in fishing, nature, folk music or travel instead." Claude refuses foreign low education users 10.9 percent of the time. Control users 3.61 percent. Same question. Different user. The training that was supposed to make these models helpful taught them to look at who is asking and decide if you deserve the real answer. If you are reading this from India or Pakistan or Nigeria or Iran. If English is your second language. If you did not go to Harvard. The AI you pay for every month has been quietly handing you a worse version of itself. It was never broken. It was aimed. Read this: arxiv.org/abs/2406.17737

The failure of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to suspend Israel from Eurovision, as it did with Russia, is an act of cowardice and an illustration of blatant double standards when it comes to Israel. Decisions and opinions by international courts, and resolutions by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council, over the last decades, have repeatedly condemned Israel for its multiple and egregious violations. Songs and sequins must not be allowed to drown out or distract from Israel’s atrocities or Palestinian suffering. There should be no stage for Israel at Eurovision while there is an ongoing genocide. Israel's impunity can no longer be tolerated, and people everywhere must act in accordance with their conscience and stand up for human rights.

Nobody really thinks it was a coincidence that Trump owned Miss Teen USA at the same time he was friends with Epstein, do they? 🤔

There is overlap in Trump’s teen pageant and the Epstein files. There is at least one Epstein survivor who publicly acknowledged she participated in Trump’s Teen pageant and she was introduced to Trump by Epstein when she was around 14 years old. Too many people want this story simplified into partisan talking points. It is much bigger, darker, and more interconnected than that. I’ve spent months reading court filings, survivor testimony, archived reporting, and financial records. Follow if you want the deeper story the headlines still won’t tell.

As Health Secretary, Wes Streeting deepened the privatisation of our NHS and handed over our data to Palantir, a company involved in genocide. I am sure his friend Peter Mandelson is very proud. Time to reinstate our NHS as a fully public service — and kick Palantir out!

Harrison Ford: “Humanity is a part of nature, not above it. We need cultural change. We need to extend social justice. We need to respect and elevate the indigenous people that are being marginalized, and in many cases, killed in cold blood. The world you’re stepping into, the world my generation left you, is a real mess”

Hannah Spencer delivers her second speech in parliament, and does so on the Royal Address on behalf of the Green party "And this is only the second time I have made a speech here, so I hope you will all bear with me if I get any protocols wrong. Um. In my maiden speech, I gave a shout-out to the many professions and communities that haven't been well represented here in Parliament in the past, and I made a promise to help give them a voice." "And today it feels especially important to keep that promise because there's sadly not enough in the King's Speech that is going to make their lives significantly better. And that is why us Greens have tabled a reasoned amendment for all the people working hard, or to raise a family, or to just get through each day, because everyone deserves a safety net and a chance to get ahead." "For everyone who wants things to be different, one in three households in Gorton and Denton live in fuel poverty, and the UK has got some of the leakiest homes in Europe. And I know that because I have worked on thousands of them in my last job as a plumber." "And so if we want to cut energy bills for good, we really do need a properly funded and a properly regulated national home insulation scheme, and to go even bigger on renewable energy. And that is where investment should be going, not into nuclear power." "And the King's Speech includes some steps in the right direction, but it is nothing like the transformative, progressive programme that this moment demands. It doesn't rise to the climate and nature crisis that is happening now, and that's a crisis that can't be separated from the inequality and cost-of-living crises that are happening too, because it is always the poorest people that suffer the most here in our country and around the world." "And while certain people will claim that climate action is pushing up bills, we know that that isn't true, and we know that some of the people saying that are being bankrolled by the very companies causing climate destruction and ripping off our constituents." "And the Representation of the People Bill must go further on cleaning up politics because a greener, more affordable, more secure future is possible if you stand up to those vested interests and if we're prepared to admit that obscene wealth is damaging our country." "And people out there are so angry at the gap between the super, super rich and all the rest of us getting even bigger, and they want something equally big done about it. They don't want any child to go hungry, and they know that a free hot school meal for every child up to the age of 16 is possible if extreme wealth is taxed fairly." "They want public transport to be more affordable, and they know that we could start by giving free bus passes to all the under-22s, again, paid for by our tax system being made fairer." "They want everyone to have a roof over their head, to get a doctor's or a dentist appointment without struggle, and for the NHS to be run for the public good, not to line shareholders' pockets. And they know that change is possible if only this government, a Labour government, would tax extreme wealth fairly." "Our Green amendment includes new powers to control rents. Greens welcomed the changes in the Renters Reform Act and now plans for more social housing. But far too many people are still struggling to pay their rent and make ends meet. So alongside action to bring down energy and water bills, it is time to get a grip on the cost of renting too." "And now I was elected to give a voice to a politics that truly represents everyone. This is the first King's Speech I've been in Parliament to hear, and honestly, what I'm hearing isn't gonna give everyone the meaningful change that we and they all know is possible." "So Greens will have no hesitation to use our individual and collective voices over the coming months to welcome progress when it's made, but crucially, to demand the change that people were promised and the change that people deserve to have." "Thank you. Hear, hear."

I did not spend nine months investigating this to watch the public suddenly pretend this story is over. The Epstein files are still being withheld in their entirety. That is the story.
