@Odd_ysseus Although the shockingly high admissions rates in those days suggest few applied and there couldn't have been a feeling among the masses that they could possibly even think of going to a top university.

@Empty_America There were undergrads in Dad’s classes that were decidedly working class and there was no one then/there to hold it against them as long as they put in the work. Some of his better students iirc.

This may "over-stimulate" some of you but I had to post it. Life story of a GI generation woman who apparently graduated from University of Chicago in 53' without actually going there, just took her exams while touring Europe. You have to read it.

Places like Gary Indiana should logically become the world's most powerful concentration of Data Centers. But the population is too traumatized, they try to stop them. Might be easier to put them in the desert outside phoenix and pump ocean water in for cooling.
Vivian@suchnerve

The Northern American Great Lakes being the planet’s largest natural source of fresh water means the entire region really should be being heavily developed with electric high-speed rail, electric busses, and high-rise apartment buildings in anticipation of the coming migration

@wrowclif NM is a little different in that it does draw people steadily, but never mass migration of normies. Mostly artists, the very rich, cowboy families come in from OK, etc.

@Empty_America That's how I feel about Iowa. If you're from here, I'm happy to argue that you should stick around. But if you're not from here, I can't really think why you'd want to move here.

I'm always hesitant to recommend that anyone move to New Mexico, because it's really a form of "internal ex-pating." If you wouldn't even consider living in Italy or Mexico, you WILL NOT like NM. Also a mass influx from the "mainland" would be very negative IMO.

Things are slow and inefficient, businesses will randomly be closed after you drive 2 hours to get there. The government is sort of Mediterranean also, economically left/paternalistic, likes to make stupid laws that are irregularly and uncertainly enforced. Lots of Welfare.

@emilykmay I personally think tots and elementary kids are great, but I have noticed that many men find caring for these ages to be excessively stressfull Including guys who are far more "liberal" than me.

@emilykmay This is sort of what the average married guy did until a couple generations ago. Not all of them, and they often took an interest in boys once they were old enough to work or go hunting. But it was common.

@Vines_N_Cattle Yes, the single rear axle semi with a gooseneck is becoming extremely common. I always wonder if the gooseneck is mostly because they had it already. Wonder if it would be better to just use a semi trailer if starting fresh.

@Empty_America Definitely feeling the older light semi for goose neck work coupled with the Tacoma daily driver lifestyle works for me, versus the $85k option that will only depreciate. FB is thick with those F750 types BTW

I'm seriously considering a used F750 crew cab flatbed for my next "pickup."

@brenthalonen2 I feel like I could get that into places you couldn't get a pickup with a gooseneck, that is actually a big part of the idea.

@Empty_America haha, would be a nightmare to park though, luxurious if you don't have such concerns.

@JackalopeFarm I would be looking for one with the hydraulic gate on the back. Falls to ground level, you put stuff on it, and it rises. Eliminates the high bed height issue for hand loading rock or hay.

@mike10101013 Say you married a white woman, as so often occurs. Are you sure that your decedents in 2050 wouldn't identify as white, assuming there wasn't affirmative action anymore?

@Empty_America I known people who lived in Alaska that only ate game, essentially zero store meat diet. I’m sure they bought carbs from the store… but fishing in Alaska can be amazing.

If you really wanted to feed yourself from the land I would select somewhere in the East with immediate access to public forest land and very liberal limits on deer. Parts of NJ or CT would work oddly well, and you can get seafood if near the coast.
FDE (Feudal Age Peater)@fde_enthusiast7

Alaska since European contact has never been about “living off the land” bc it’s simply impossible in most of the state without imported food The Alaska territory was always about resource extraction like gold and fur

I drive both gas and diesel, including both in CDL weight vehicles. If someone else buys the truck, I prefer diesel. But prices on used diesel pickup trucks can be crazy in usa, everyone wants one, often just to show off. Also diesel tends to be $1 per gallon more than gas, which cuts into the MPG benefit a lot.

@Odd_ysseus I actually do both ford and chevy, both personally and for work, not a brand guy really. Chevy is typically a worse truck with a better gas motor.

@Empty_America VB my best and favorite truck of all that I’ve had is the ‘99 350 7.3 chipped for >150 hp extended cab long bed. A buddy had the same truck w a flatbed and 6 speed. There has been for a quarter century no better truck. I know you’re a Chevy guy but it’s time to transgress.
