I have just spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
I expressed France’s full solidarity in the face of the indiscriminate strikes carried out by Israel in Lebanon today, which resulted in a very high number of civilian casualties. We condemn these strikes in the strongest possible terms.
They pose a direct threat to the sustainability of the ceasefire that has just been reached. Lebanon must be fully covered by it.
I reiterated the need to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and France’s determination to support the efforts of the Lebanese authorities to uphold the country’s sovereignty and implement the Hezbollah disarmament plan.

@enahs @GreggThomp3502 @allenanalysis I think he is referring to NATO where participating countries are supposed spend at least 2% of their gdp on military budget where Spain hasn’t done so for the last 20 years. Thats not a law though, just a guideline that they continue to ignore. So they aren’t breaching anything

But we have to set a standard. We can't spend our time claiming Israel is some sort of beacon of western values when it acts in this way. We can't lower the standard for allies to a - what would terrorists do - test.

1) the EU doesn't have a mandated defence spending rate
2) Spain is actually a net contributor to EU budget based on the last yearly data

@janekin24 @allenanalysis Yeah, that's not good - but it's just a pipe. Will take a few hours / days to fix.. it's not on a parallel in any way with bombing a city and killing hundreds of civilians because some terrorists might be in the country
