Just finished Nicholas Enrich's new book, "Into the Wood Chipper," about Doge's destruction of USAID. It's a window into an asylum in which clueless zealots around Elon Musk were killing aid recipients worldwide without having a clue what they were even doing.

The Ethiopian community’s growth in the Twin Cities is visible here: years of faith, labor, community-building, and investment in America, while preserving deep Orthodox Christian and Ethiopian roots.

This is Minneapolis, Minnesota not Africa. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians just opened their new church building after years of hard work. They’re praising God , keeping the roots of their religion tradition , and investing in America. 🇺🇸☦️🫶🏽✝️🇪🇹☦️ Orthodox Christians

Two things can be true: It is entirely acceptable to say Candace Owens is a horrible person, an antisemite and part of the always-grifting right. It is also acceptable to recognize that this mockup is a, yes, vile depiction of Owens — trafficking in classic racist and misogynistic tropes of black women (“USES RICH WHITE MEN!” Nice touch there). I’d say it is below the president of the United States, but that train left the station a long time ago.

Minneapolis immigrants are still paying the cost of Operation Metro Surge, housing advocate AsaleSol Young writes. An extension of the pre-eviction filing period pushes the burden onto families, mutual aid networks and small landlords. sahanjournal.com/opinion/minnea…

Believe it or not -- I sense we are going to look back at this time as the "good old days" of LLMs (before they became either impossibly expensive, driven by advertising interests or other enshitiffication)

In grad school, I couldn't find a good resource for figuring out where to publish in communication. So I built one. Journal Navigator — 76 journals, searchable by subfield, impact factor, and open access status. endalk-chala.github.io/journals/

🚨New preprint. Many papers show AI can write fact-checks as well as humans (or better) in the lab, but very few test this in the real world. We run the first online evaluation of AI fact-check writing with X Community Notes’ AI writer API. Paper w. @bakkermichiel 1/

(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people. OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted? A thread on some of of our findings:
