Bill Ackman
Bill Ackman@BillAckman·
I celebrated my birthday this weekend and I received the most beautiful note I have ever received from a friend. I can't imagine a better birthday gift. It is a deeply personal ode to my father. I share it only because I think it is too beautiful a gift for me to keep for myself and I do so in honor of my father. The scene was an event space where Marcin Patrzałek performed for us. I met @MarcinGuitar on @X. He is an incredible talent. The note came in the form of a WhatsApp text: Dear Bill, Yesterday, while a young prodigy performed before an audience of spellbound spectators—much like one is captivated by a magician with more than one trick up his sleeve—images from a family album flashed across a screen. Adults and children with smiling faces, confident in life, happy to be together. Faces of parents, children, and friends—profiles of happiness and silhouettes of joy. Not a cloud in the sky, just the unfolding of a life blessed by love and closeness, gently swept along by the fresh air of travel, camaraderie, and family gatherings. And in all of this, a constant presence by your side, as if you were inseparable, to the point that one might have wondered who was the shadow of whom: your father. The resemblance between the two of you has grown over time—no doubt the effect of graying hair, but not only that: in both men, the same satisfaction in their eyes, stemming from the fact that they have fulfilled their obligations to their loved ones with courage and determination, and that this justifies saying, without presumption, that they did not come into existence for nothing and that they have even carved out a path that has itself become a road to fulfillment for others. The satisfaction, then, of having lived up to a duty that no one in particular ever demanded of oneself, nor spelled out in so many words, nor described in advance, but which nonetheless haunted the conscience of the human being that one is. It is this duty that gives meaning to existence, but also to that category of Mensch that has often been mentioned in connection with you over the course of this weekend. So, yesterday, on the screen, behind a sort of genius-like, slow-to-mature teenager, capable of transforming a toccata as beautiful as the world into a rock riff of eternal youth, what I saw was this: a mature Mensch, loving to take his wife’s hand in his, leaning gently, kindly, and confidently over a little boy at first, then a teenager, and finally an adult who has become a father in his turn, to tell him without saying it: I am you, my son, and you are me, your father; we are united forever, so that everything I do, you do it, and everything you do, I do it. It was then that I myself understood not only where your self-confidence came from, but where that wild generosity, that tireless desire to do good, that appetite for loving life and blessing its kindnesses, came from. Where your sense of responsibility came from. Where your will to find happiness came from. The fact that your father is gone changes nothing about the fact that he never left, and that he will never leave. Leaving simply meant that he would not only be within you, but that he is you. For a while, gazing at these photos, with a fascination that grew as I noticed the absence of any negativity in them, I asked myself: can one ever recover from the loss of such a father? How can one bear his absence, when the love received was so strong? Even the greatest love one can have for one’s wife and children cannot heal the wound of time passing and taking our most precious affections away from our presence... But no, these questions were wrong: I realized this as the photos scrolled by. This father who was supposed to be absent was very much there, completely there, there as never before; he was right in front of me, in the flesh, in the room. He was wearing a bright blue tuxedo and a crisp white shirt; his gaze was clear, like that of someone who sees far and from afar. I myself had just given him a hug; I had just thanked him for the three days of enchanted wonder he had given to his loved ones. Well, yes, this man and his father were one and the same person, and it was from understanding this that came that indescribable feeling of having accomplished something in his life. In the thanks to everyone for contributing to this success, there were two voices in one. The merging of two voices. It was your father thanking your loved ones for making you who you are. It was you thanking your father for making you who you are. It’s not that you’ve made money, that you’ve become known to strangers, that you have the power to influence the course of events, etc. No, none of that matters much. What matters is that you are now living proof that life always triumphs over death, as Judaism teaches anyone who is willing to listen. Yesterday on the screen, in the close-up faces of a father and son, the psalm of the prophet Hosea shone through: “O death, where is your victory?” Happy 60th, my dearest Bill,

On April 30th, the Department of Energy's Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) approved the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) for the Aalo-X Critical Test Reactor, advancing Aalo into its final pre-operations phase, the Operational Readiness Review. The DSA is the authoritative safety basis for a DOE nuclear facility. It demonstrates that a facility can be operated safely across its full range of normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. In the Aalo-X Critical Test Reactor, Aalo will test its full-scale nuclear core. The reactor contains nuclear fuel, moderator, control rod drive mechanisms, shielding, and instrumentation systems that are direct analogs of what will operate in the 10 MWe Aalo-X reactor being built next door. To further the CTR as an on-ramp to commercial deployment, no components used to achieve this milestone were repurposed: - Fuel assemblies were designed and assembled in-house. - The entirely new, compliant reactor facility was completed in a matter of months. - The commercial fuel supply chain was excercised from mining through on-site uranium delivery. - The reactor was designed and built modularly in-house and transported on commercial trucks to Idaho. - The reactor was built to NQA-1, the standard for commercial reactor quality, rather than ANS 15.8, which governs prototype reactors. A regulatory milestone at this level is the output of many people doing difficult, detailed work over a long period. We want to thank DOE leadership and the review staff who executed the DOE-STD-1271 framework, along with the modernized NE orders. We also want to give a huge thank you to the team at Aalo who carried out this work, along with our partners and advisors. The final phase before criticality is the DOE-led Readiness Review, in which DOE verifies that the people, facility, and programs can be cleared to operate as documented. Today’s DSA milestone proves our team’s execution discipline, and we are looking forward to next steps. Onward to criticality.

Aalo just got the DOE equivalent of an NRC operating license for Aalo-X at Idaho National Lab -- the DSA is approved. A bit of context for why this is historic: The last time the US built a brand-new nuclear reactor this fast, the Beatles hadn't broken up yet. INL is the birthplace of the first atomic age -- 52 reactors built between 1949 and the mid-70s, where Walter Zinn lit four lightbulbs with EBR-I in 1951 and birthed civilian nuclear power. Then we atrophied our ability to move fast. Vogtle 3 & 4, the most recent US reactors, took ~15 years and over $30B. Matt and Yasir founded Aalo in 2023. We were the first to back them. It's 2026, and they have: – designed their own fuel and stood up the supply chain that will deliver hundreds of reactors – designed and built the core components to be full-scale and identical to the full-power reactor that can economically generate 30 MWth – constructed an entirely new nuclear facility from a dirt field Reactor 53 at INL. First new reactor there in 50 years. And the first sodium-cooled reactor to start up in the US in over four decades. The scaling laws of the second atomic age are about how quickly you can build, iterate, and scale reactors for commercial uses. Aalo is about to prove that design and build isn't a decade-long affair and instead can be done in single-digit years, as a first-time operator, with their own fuel, on land they leased and built on themselves. Next up: criticality. This is exactly why @fiftyyears exists -- to back founders like @MattLoszak and @yasir_fission who make the impossible possible. Huge props to the @AaloAtomics team for delivering on an impossible timeline, and to the DOE team whose support has been instrumental. The first light of the second atomic age is genuinely dawning. Onwards.

Aalo has received DSA approval from DOE for our 10 MW reactor, zero-power criticality! This is the equivalent of an NRC license in DOE space. We've been working towards this milestone at Aalo for 2.5 years. This was a very ambitious project under the DOE reactor pilot program for a bunch of reasons: ➡️ 10 MW, commercial-scale system. This is a system with the full-scale amount of fuel, moderator, controls, etc, necessary for powering AI data centers. Proving out this supply chain is a big deal. In the coming weeks we'll be taking it to zero power criticality, and then going to full-power operation in the months that follow. We'll be getting the factory set up in parallel to mass-produce it. ➡️ Built everything ourselves, from scratch. We started with a green field, and within 4 months finished the building, facilities, policies & procedures, reactor, shielding, instrumentation, control, etc. People thought this would be impossible to do on this timeline for a reactor of this size, but we've done it. Hyperscalers care about speed, and we're showing that moving fast is possible at commercial scale. ➡️ Achieving criticality before July 4th. We set out to ensure we met the president's order, and we are on pace to do so. We only started hiring at Aalo 2.5 yrs ago. It was questionable how realistic it was to take on all of the above while being one of the younger nuclear companies, but we are on track to pull it off. Insanely proud of the team for all the hard work, nights and weekends that went into this. Full blog post will be linked in comments.

Imagine a future Aalo facility that: > Uses seawater for cooling, > Desalinates that water to make it drinkable, > Splits that salt to make sodium metal for our reactors, > And separates out Uranium from that sea water for "limitless" fuel! Feasibility & math below 👇
