In my outline (I've budgeted different word counts for different subsections) the current book chapter I'm working on is supposed to be 12,200 words, not counting footnotes or endnotes. What will the actual length be that I submit to my editor? Closest guess gets a free copy. Fine print: * If it gets split into multiple chapters it's the combined length that counts. * Chapter is primarily about sportsbetting but also with considerable material on the evolution of Las Vegas and the casino industry generally. Very well-sourced, I'm excited for people to read it!

Put it like this: if Omicron *does* prove to be milder after health officials insist there's "no evidence" it's milder—when there is evidence, just not proof—they're going to have a hell of a time getting people to take precautions for the not-so-mild Omega variant or whatever.

I don't know how well it will extrapolate to the rest of the world but the South Africa data is certainly encouraging. I think it's important for public health officials and journalists to share good news as well as bad news; otherwise, they risk squandering credibility.

The priority should be distributing as many doses as quickly as possible to whomever wants it. And if you want to prioritize those in long term care facilities - totally fine - call in the National Guard and industrialize administration.

This is the equivalent of the Titanic sending out half-empty lifeboats. We don’t have enough doses right now and risking any of them because you won’t to control who gets them puts others at risk and puts doctors in the position of potentially violating their Oath.

I am not as down on Cuomo/NY's COVID handling as some people on here. But, yeah, this is a bad idea. You don't want to create too much friction to vaccine distribution at a time when distribution is slow and doses have a relatively short shelf life.
