The academic left has traditionally opposed “the Western canon” but has never supported the idea of expanding the canon to include classic works of ancient India, Arabia, Persia, China. Their opposition is not really against “the West” per se, but rather against the idea of using

@michaelshermer I am concerned that at the ultra-elite institution level, without affirmative action, black representation would plummet to levels so low that even I would find them disconcerting. E.g., Ruth Bader Ginsburg hired one black (Paul Watford) out of her 159 law clerks. Is 0.6% enuf?

Yet another study that discovers what everyone already knew existed, namely reverse discrimination in the (mistaken) belief that this was necessary to correct for past discrimination. Mistaken because it assumes formerly oppressed peoples can't make it without white help.
The Washington Post@washingtonpost

Breaking news: After a year-long investigation, the Justice Department concluded the Yale School of Medicine discriminated based on race in its admissions, favoring Black and Hispanic applicants over White and Asian ones. wapo.st/3Rp0yTo

@Steve_Sailer @michaelshermer It is worth thinking about what happen to legitimacy if some major group happens never to attain some position. I think having 3 branches of govt helps. The Judicial is the intellectual branch. The Exec is the mesomorph, muscular, branch. The Leg is the miscelleanou branch.

@Steve_Sailer @michaelshermer How many Norwegian-Americans did she hire? How many left-handed short people? How many Eastern Orthodox ? We should not be concerned about some group being left out for good reasons. (Oh, what havoc this Norwegian-American would cause!)

The world’s worst highway, the 405. I hate this highway with a visceral hatred and a passion I used to reserve for America’s enemies. It sucks the life out of you every moment you spend inching up the road toward the Sepulveda Pass on the way to LAX. It’s a slice of humanity you have to miss. I can’t wait to never drive it again!

@erasmuse @TomCotterillX Is that a serious question? Because in addition to being uncomfortable and impeding normal activities, a vest would provide very little protection to a small child too immature to defend the parts of their body left exposed: neck, head, limbs, etc.

I’ve just walked through central London and passed a group of maybe 30 Jewish schoolchildren. They’re perhaps eight and nine years old. They’re being escorted through the city by two security personnel wearing stab proof vests. What has London become? Are we really a place where Jewish children out in a school trip need guards? It’s a tragic state of affairs.

My umbrella broke in Osaka, the mechanism that opens it just snapped. I was about to throw it away when an old man stopped me. He said something in Japanese and gestured at the umbrella. I didn't understand. He pulled out a small toolkit from his bag and pointed at my umbrella,

The sweet spot with IQ gaps is ~10 points higher than the girl. That's the zone where she can tell you're smart, but the two of you can still relate. Beyond 10 points, she just thinks you're a weirdo because she can't understand your thought process at all. So there's plenty

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) has not cast a vote in the House of Representatives since April 17. The 83-year-old lawmaker has now missed more than 40 consecutive roll call votes. As elected officials, members of Congress are expected to maintain transparency with their constituents regarding their ability to fulfill their duties. Where is Rep. Wilson? Hoping she is doing well and will provide an update soon for the people of Florida’s 24th District. (Video: AI)

The cow did not give its life so you could trim the fat off and nudge it to the side of the plate like a coward. Consider what's actually happening there. An animal lived an entire life, ate the grass, walked the field, and you have surveyed the most calorie-dense, nutrient-rich, fat-soluble-vitamin-laden part of the whole carcass and decided it belongs in the food waste caddy. You kept the lean, because the lean was marketed to you. You binned the part your ancestors would have come to blows over. And they would have. Every hunter-gatherer society we've studied went for the fat first. The Inuit prized the blubber and the marrow. The Plains tribes rendered the back fat and the suet and left the lean for the dogs in hard times. Early humans cracked long bones open for marrow while the lean meat sat there, politely ignored. There's even a name for eating too much lean and not enough fat. Rabbit starvation. You can fill your stomach with lean meat and still waste away, because the body simply cannot run on protein alone. The fat was never the indulgence. It was the survival. So eat the fat. Then add more. Cook the steak in butter, spoon the tallow over the top, render the trim instead of discarding it, eat the marrow, eat the fat cap, eat the bit a cereal company spent forty years teaching you to fear. We were never protein hunters. We are fat hunters, and always have been. Honour your ancestors. Honour the cow. Eat the fat.

@charlesmurray Lots, I think. My Uni High Urbana Illinois probably had 115 IQ as a minimum. I took the easy calculus with the jocks, for instance. The school has had 4 Nobel laureates despite having about 40 students per class. 4 or 5 of us got NSF graduate fellowships.

I would guess that in a class at the one-time merit-based Thomas Jefferson High School, the mean was probably at least 135 and the SD was probably around 12. If that were the case, about 95.3 percent of the TJ students would have IQs higher than those of the students in your high school. If your high school had a mean of 115 and SD of 12, then only about 9.5% of its students would have scores at least equal to the TJ mean. So the answer to your question is emphatically yes, if "mess with" involves only cognitive tasks. I'm being honest.
Maurice "Lil Moe" Williams@lilmoemusic

@charlesmurray My high school had an average IQ of 115. You think TJ students could mess with us? Be honest

@sfmcguire79 NYU isn't Ivy League. It fits its old reputation that a student would want an entertainer as Commencement speaker and would never heard of a leading intellectual. Remember Woody Allen?
