@ericwg

I work on energy transition issues in Texas. I'm an urbanist and a proponent of mass political movements. Too many ideas, not enough time.

Cheap power brings new industries. Higher demand leads to higher prices which leads to more solar + storage and cheaper power again. I featured the @TexasTribune's TribCast with @Ericwg on how Texas' growing power demand and supply in my R&P Picks; link in reply. #txenergy

We took an new industrial site in CA off-grid with solar, batteries, and gas. Everyone said it wouldn't work. After over a year of operations: ✅ faster and cheaper than grid interconnection ✅ positive savings (net of PPA and fuel) ✅ majority clean power ✅ 99%+ uptime

We just posted the full Power Markets panels from DERVOS with @James_McGinniss, @ericwg, @jacob_mays, @BPBartholomew, and Andy Reger. The most common question after the panel was "WTF is full strength energy pricing?!?" If you only have 5 minutes, here you go:

@juliogatx Yes we can! Microgrids can help with both of those indirectly and provide revenue instead of just costs. A tree hitting a line is less impactful if you have resources on the other side of the line too.

One important local policy implication: invest in Austin Energy. We are so fortunate to have public power but we can’t keep cheap rates and bigger transfers to the general fund while asking for more climate-related improvements like vegetation management and power line burial.

Just four more days of (still very warm) numbers to add, but this is probably going to go down as the hottest October in Austin's 126-year weather history #atxwx #Txwx

@JigarShahDC Coordination will be critical. That time we built massive pipelines, interconnected utilities together so they could serve shipyards, and had a unified industrial policy.

@AKMcGlinchy Seems like Austin Housing Finance Corp could do some lending here and get some wins by financing some affordable homes with less parking. AHFC has a lot of wiggle room on how they lend and invest.

I mention this in the radio version, but lenders are likely not going to sign off on a project they think has too little parking. After this story pub'd, a developer emailed me. He's building condos in 78704. He didn't want to build parking, but couldn't get financing w/o it.
Audrey McGlinchy@AKMcGlinchy

NEW: After Austin got rid of parking reqs last year, I wondered: how much parking's getting built? Turns out, it's a bit too soon to tell. But one policy gives us a glimpse. W/o parking reqs, developers build ~25% fewer spaces than they would have had to: kut.org/housing/2024-0…

@RepCasar I'd love to have all this attention on Haiti result in some real reform in how the US treats Haiti and Haitians refugees. We should have done it decades ago but we can do it now.

A Project 2025 board member just told me it’d be better “in the long run” if Haitians were enslaved & colonized for 30 more years. THIS is who is behind Trump’s Project 2025.

The distributed solar story in Pakistan is nuts!! It's now the third largest importer of solar in the world and basically all of it isn't a part of the utility system. All of this is in response to the central planners that run the national grid making decisions that ended up jacking up rates via bad debt. There's so much distributed solar being installed that the utility system is seeing a meaningful decline in demand. It went down 9% over the past year. They're worried about a death spiral. Despite the national grid being concerned, provinces are leaning in. Punjab and Sindh provinces are going as far as to give away solar panels to people who can't afford grid electricity. ft.com/content/69e4cb…
