There's something special for a "generalist artist," as it's called in contemporary times, to finally use all the interesting things you've learned without needing a filming crew and create something interesting. Fascinating and scary times ahead, where one man can create a whole film by himself.

This is a remake of a class project from art school that I did a few decades ago. I thought it would be a nice small project to learn with. I tend to be overly ambitious, so this gave me some limits. Thanks to @chrisfirst and @openart_ai for allowing me to try out their platform. This took most of my 24,000 credits. Mostly because of my inexperience.

One of my favorite feelings is walking around multiplayer maps long after the servers have shut down. There's this weird sensation of having many memories of this nonexistent place, yet it still feels like it lives on by itself.

@koguGameDev Very rare these days. I do own books, for example, yet I don't miss having video games or movies physically. Maybe it's a capitalistic mentality to "own" your physical thing instead of appreciating it for what it is and expressed.

カズくん@shimikazu_sub

DLの方が便利だからディスク終了でいいって意見、それって本読むの面倒だから紙の本廃止しようって言ってるのと同じだと思うんだけど、 効率に脳焼かれすぎて、文化とか体験を削ってる自覚ないの怖い

I think something interesting is that what got me into 3D was not 3D, but the ability to tell a story. Before that I was interested in animatronics; before that, movie directing. I'm still gonna use Blender. I'm genuinely curious what started it for you, @rileyb3d? What inspired you to learn 3D?

@EthanAvila @ggdev007 @Blender I think it's perfectly fair for you to decide it peaked for you, and you've decided to try something else. That's reasonable. It's not for everyone. Saying it doesn't make it so for the masses. Good luck on a new medium! It doesn't really align with my interests.

Not so long ago was the golden era of @Blender, maybe 2 years ago. Many YouTubers were making fun and educational content, along with lots of add-ons and important updates to the software. There were many innovators in the space. It's evident that all of this has declined substantially, and it will continue to do so. Only a small niche will remain.

I've been using Blender for more than 10 years, and Maya before. I love it. I'm not denying that new people are still learning it for the first time. Yet I feel (my opinion based on what I've seen) that engagement and general emotion toward 3D in general have declined. Yes, more people download Blender for many different reasons: games, jewelry, 3D printing, CGI, even AI. I say this because I miss that time 2 years ago. It felt different, but again I'm not establishing a fact. It's my opinion.

I have bias (first picked up Blender around 2008). But someone calling from the genai camp saying "Blender's golden era is done" is speaking from a place of personal bias as well. More people than ever are just starting to learn Blender. That's based on the numbers. I'm not really speculating. That's simply a pretty telling fact. Just because you "feel the same shift is happening" doesn't necessarily make it true. 🙃

@ggdev007 @Blender I agree, but what I mean is that I believe 3D as a medium has already peaked, like stop-motion or animatronics did at some point. Right now there's a big shift towards AI. Again nothing bad. I love 3D. Maybe a bit melancholic.

@rileyb3d @Blender Totally! And that will never stop, like stop-motion. It's still innovating on its own. Yet 3D took its place as the popular medium. I feel the same shift is happening.

@EthanAvila @Blender Still plenty of innovation in the space. Still plenty of people dedicated to educating. More people than ever starting to learn it for the first time.

Total length: 10 seconds, with one cut dividing it into two shots. Use the attached character sheet as the identity reference. The woman must be the exact same person — same face, same short black hair, same skin texture, same casual outfit (gray t-shirt, jeans) — kept perfectly consistent across both shots for the entire 10 seconds. Her face must look identical before and after the cut. Scene: a bright, lived-in home kitchen in the daytime. The same Japanese woman is cooking curry. A pot simmers on the stove; chopped vegetables and curry roux sit on the counter. Shot 1 (about 5 seconds): she slowly stirs the curry with a wooden spoon. The camera begins on a front three-quarter view of her face and gradually drifts to a clean side profile as she leans toward the pot. Calm, focused expression. Slow, unhurried movement. Cut to Shot 2 (about 5 seconds): a closer front view of her face. She lifts a spoonful, tastes it, and reacts with a soft, pleased, satisfied smile. The camera holds gently on her face, slowly pushing in. Warm, natural expression. Lighting: soft, even, flattering light filling her face from the front in both shots, keeping her whole face bright and clearly visible with no harsh shadows hiding her expression. Avoid backlight or side shadows that darken half of her face. Style: realistic live-action, photographic, natural skin with visible texture, not a render. Calm, warm, everyday mood. 16:9 widescreen framing.

I got into VFX and 3D tools so that I could be a filmmaker - not the other way around. So when people ask me how, as an artist with an arsenal of creative tools and the knowledge to leverage them, I can use AI, the answer is really simple: It’s just another tool that helps me get to my goal of telling stories. If you wanted to be a 3D animator because you love 3D tools and the process of creating with them, then I love that for you. But to me, the tools have always been a means to an end and not the end. It keeps me evolving constantly and trying new technologies to see how they can fit in with the process. Today it’s 3D and AI. Tomorrow… who knows?

Not gonna get into the sad psychology of the accusers, but it definitely helps make the case that not everything made with AI looks like slop or these idiots would be easily able to tell the difference. Ignorance, aggression, and closemindedness are the three pillars of these losers.
Dominic Carter ᯅ@DominicCarterLA

Look at where we are now. This legendary VFX artist is getting the tons of “is this AI? This has to be AI comments” - that’s where we are. People want something to hate & the backlash/questions will be the new normal for years to come even for artists doing things traditionally
