Part of Dick Cheney’s legacy is the #RFS. GWB had Cheney chair an Energy Task Force that vetted various policies for inclusion in the Administration’s energy priorities. The Task Force endorsed a Renewable Fuels Standard. The discussions were “secret”. The result was law! RIP

Among the folks I will be toasting tonight in celebration of 20 years of the #RFS is Red Cavaney, former CEO of the API. Red understood the threat from the continued reliance on the water-contaminating MTBE and sought solutions. Ethanol & the RFS provided one! Cheers, Red!

20 years ago today, I celebrated the signing of the RFS into law with a hoot and a holler in the middle of Lake Winnipausaukee, NH where the family was gathered for our annual vacation. So I’m here again today - celebrating a win for farmers and consumers! The #RFS has aged well.

I lost a good friend yesterday and so did agriculture. Mike Perrine started me on my farm broadcasting career path in the mid 1970's. Over the years he helped me and many other broadcasters as well. I will always be grateful for our friendship. He will certainly be missed.

President Jimmy Carter was the driving force behind the Energy Policy Act of 1978, which included a tax incentive for the production and use of fuel #ethanol. It jumped started the industry that today lowers consumer costs, reduces emissions, and enhances energy security. RIP

So today is my birthday. At my age, we don’t celebrate, we commemorate. But for me, as with anyone who has suffered a grievous loss, all of the holidays and commemorative days are more painful than joyous. They bring up the good times, when our family was whole. For me it’s particularly true because my birthday comes right around the time of the High Holidays—not to mention, going forward, October 7. The liturgy on Yom Kippur, written in the book who is to live, and who is to die, is too much to take. I do have one birthday wish. For anyone who follows me, you know what it is.

For those following my @JohnDeere tractor fire… this letter appeared in my mailbox this weekend. JD has determined that a lightly-used clean tractor with 33 hours self combusting is not a failure of anything green. Act of God? I am so lucky. It is a really good thing I already have my new tractor, it would have changed color. Fun having a tractor you can’t park inside.
