Cole Caufield, Ivan Demidov and Oliver Kapanen score in the shootout to give Montreal the 4-3 lead. With the win, the Habs leapfrog the Buffalo Sabres for 2nd in the Atlantic, trailing Tampa Bay by two points.

Cole Caufield now has 81 points in 73.5 games this season He is only the second player from the 2019 NHL draft to break 80 points in a season, behind Jack Hughes His 47 goals this season is also the highest single-season goal total among the entire draft class #GoHabsGo

@yolo_pinyato Notice how one of them is performing over expectation and it’s not Byfield 👍

Slafkovsky is on pace to break 70 points which is a big jump in production for him, but the average forward would be on pace for 80 pts w/ his deployment (and the avg 21 year old would be on pace for 72). MTL is stacked offensively, but Slaf is more passenger than play driver.

every "slafkovsky is good now" post is just a screen shot of his points because people don't know how to calibrate someone being the 6th best offensive player on a top 5 offense in the league lol

at the deadline people bring up a lot that a 2nd is not actually that valuable, validly backing it up with data about draft pick success probability. but the thing about 2nds is that you can use them to acquire guys like Chinakhov

Our 2nd line is incredibly dynamic just needs efficiency (Slaf especially, love that he's carrying the puck more, just needs to pick his spots)... Suzuki's been efficient with points and on ice metrics, but hasn't been dynamic at all... The answer? Slafkovsky-Suzuki-Demidov

@JFreshHockey What do you think explains the huge difference in the habs’ xG% after the change in the model?

Michael Hage has been good this season on a Michigan team that is bouncing back from last season. Montreal has a 2C problem, and I think there's a solid chance Hage is the answer there. #GoHabsGo

@nickiacoban Why is your model drastically different than this one? x.com/i/status/19985… Also, seems like he had a slow start but started rising before the WJC. All accounts are that he looks dynamite 🤷‍♂️
Foley@NHLFoley

I appreciate this one Hagens is the #5 in college. He's been the well-rounded, two-way forward and great shooter we all expected Letourneau is on track. Crushing the offense, getting involved on defense. Seems like he's a few steps back from a real, full-ice impact #NHLBruins

A lot of people are excited about James Hagens, but to be honest, I'm a little worried. For a guy as skilled as he is, he hasn't been able to produce at a high level for two seasons. The freshman season excuse is gone now, and his production hasn't improved... #NHLBruins

@fnveenie @DavidSt_Louis It’s really noticeable how every time he receives the puck in the offensive zone, it’s out of the zone within 5 seconds

@DavidSt_Louis While I agree that these skills wouldn't shine as much in the bottom 6, I think his weaknesses also dull the strengths of his linemates. Demidov needs offensive zone time, and I find Kapanen struggles at extending zone time. Slaf is strong in this regard, but Kapanen kills plays.

Quite easy to position offensively and find space when you're playing with someone whose main talent is drawing in defenders and beating them. That talent would not shine on a 3rd or 4th line. Kapanen is in the right spot to play his game, but needs to control the play more.
Mike Veenie@fnveenie

Kapanen is very good at getting open in a shooting position and is a pretty good finisher. Off-puck, he is quite good for a rookie. On-puck needs work. He isn't a strong puck carrier, forechecker, or passer, at least yet. His intelligence gives me some optimism for improvement.

@JFreshHockey It’s weird, we’re not outperforming our horrible expected goals but still winning. I guess it’s because our losses are almost always blowouts and our wins are usually even games that end in close scores/OT
