Very pleased to be able to announce this funding to help support planning for Lung Cancer Screening! w/ @NCIGlobalHealth colleague Paul Dora Rose, @PatrickNRedmond @jamesfomahony @QUBCancerProf, @publichealthni @HSELive Screening teams and others! #Teamwork
Queen's University Belfast 🎓@QUBelfast

We are leading the charge in the fight against #LungCancer, thanks to a new cross-border project aimed at establishing screening programmes across the island of #Ireland. The LUNG SHOT project will bring leading experts and key stakeholders in #NorthernIreland and the Republic of Ireland together to collaborate on tackling the disease. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Northern Ireland and the third most common #Cancer in the Republic of Ireland. Despite growing evidence that #EarlyDetection through #Screening can significantly reduce mortality, neither region have yet funded a formal lung cancer screening programme. This will make the new programmes the first of their kind on the island of Ireland. “This project is incredibly significant as it will enable us to link with patient advocacy groups and community partnerships to ensure that the screening programmes are tailored to local needs, while benefiting from international expertise and best practices. “The findings will provide vital insights into how lung cancer screening can be integrated into existing #Healthcare systems, with the potential to save lives by detecting cancer earlier, when treatment is more effective.” (Dr Ethna McFerran, lead investigator from @QubPGJCCR, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences). @irish_news Ps - Northern Ireland has about five times more elected legislators per capita than England.

@irish_news “NI has ~40% more - is true but misleading. NI counts workers in services England has privatised or operates at local gov - NI runs a full devolved admin for 1.9m people & has integrated health & social care plus legacy policing structures. The gap isn’t simply “excess staff.”

Northern Ireland has 40% more public sector workers per capita than England, new figures reveal. It has been estimated that the Stormont Executive would have an additional £2.5bn to spend on public services if the number of state-employed workers per capita matched those in England. @CraigBrockie Does this mean there’s any risk to HCPs for acquiring bacteria in carer activities? *assuming there’s nuance here

Scientists just cracked the multiple sclerosis code after decades of searching. Two specific gut bacteria are triggering the disease, and they've proven it using identical twins and mice. This changes everything we know about MS:

@MarieCurieEOLC This area of work represents a real opportunity to advance care planning, effective communication & referrals - but mostly, to give people and their families a better support system at the most difficult times in their lives.

Why ambulance-led end of life care needs urgent reform🚑 The recently published "Enhancing Paramedic Care at End of Life Policy Briefing", developed from research findings from the ParAid study, shares key findings and recommendations on how to improve end of life care delivery in this service. In a new blog, Dr Sam Royston sets out the challenges paramedics face, such as lack of: access to medical records, support lines, and specific, tailored training to deliver end of life care – something they are increasingly being asked to do. The blog also highlights the need for a national plan. Read the blog - mariecurie.org.uk/blog/why-ambul…

@BarryMcAree The overall NHS staff profile is ~ 50% non clinical staff … somehow this headline is incredulous - there’s evidence to support mortality benefits from nursing & medical staff ratios - I’d be curious to see the evidence that underpins these claims and the outcomes that accrue?

Amen! Also due to shortage of approp trained staff (eg Drs) per head popul’n &in places, poor division of labour. Taxpayer’s money is often wasted on lesser trained staff who can create unnecessary work &pull Drs away from patients, to do more admin! More Drs; more cost effective
Sophia Edwards 💙@sophia_edw28123

Frontline NHS staff are overwhelmed by admin due to a shortage of managers: 👉Chasing paperwork 👉Managing rotas 👉Navigating broke administrative systems It’s taking time away from patients and pushing an already stretched workforce to breaking point. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…

@ursulaamason @laurence903 @rcgp_ni Perhaps- but set against Total ED attendances, Oct 2024–Mar 2025 = 377,418 - the 104k visits to GP - Using a 24.6% admission probability: •Conservative (10% diversion): 104,000 × 0.10 × 0.246 ≈ 2,560 admissions avoided. Which would be vital at times of highest pressure

Crunching the numbers in the NI winter plan. additional capacity in GP =8000 sessions. That’s 104000 patients! Sounds a lot but GPs see 200000 patients every week so the additional capacity = 2.5 days worth of access for patients. Drop in the ocean in relation to need! @rcgp_ni

Such important work, grateful to Rawan for sharing her results at our LUNGSHoT event in June in the PhD showcase @hrbireland
Queen's University Belfast 🎓@QUBelfast

A landmark study has estimated that #AirPollution is responsible for more than 130 #LungCancer cases annually in #NorthernIreland. Working with an international team of experts, our researchers linked the postcodes of more than 900 lung cancer patients and over 8,000 cancer-free controls to high-resolution historical air pollution maps.   This innovative approach allowed them to estimate long-term exposure to PM2.5 – tiny particles that penetrate deep into the lungs – and calculate the associated cancer risk.  “These findings remind us that air pollution is not just an environmental issue—it is a clear and preventable threat to public health. Every lung cancer case linked to air pollution represents suffering that could have been avoided if we act decisively to reduce exposure.” (Mrs Rawan Alhattab, lead author and PhD Student from @CPH_QUB) Learn more here: ow.ly/2Srs50X9OXy #LoveQUBResearch @MHLSQUB

Great event, thanks for the invitation to facilitate today! …and such a treat to get a peak at the MOLI exhibits at lunch!
All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI)@AlCRIproject

Inspiring day at the ‘Public & Patient Involvement in Translational Cancer Research’ workshop at MoLI, bringing together early career researchers from AICRIstart & the eHealth Hub for Cancer. Guided by Dr Emma Dorris @UCD_PPI_Ignite & @UCANIRELAND PPI partners, researchers explored how to embed meaningful #PPI into preclinical & data science research through reflection, dialogue & shared learning. Supported by @hea_irl’s #SharedIsland #NorthSouthResearchProgramme — fostering collaboration & impact across the island.
