My apologies for the "different flavor of shit" comment. It was too harsh. FP came up because it comes up in every conversation about the whole BSC movement. FP & raddebugger are usually quite conflated with BSC. I'd scatter my criticism a bit wider if I knew about any other deliverables made by people from BSC affiliated circles. I get that you (as in people who love and speak at the BSC) are angry at the state of software, but at the end of the day, people like @rfleury (who is sort of like a poster child of BSC) translate it into arrogance and mockery, rather than trying to inspire anyone? At the end of the day, though I should've worded it in a way that wouldn't personally insult you or FP, my statement is: "Stop being arrogant assholes or don't get surprised that people are assholes right back at you guys"

I seriously don't know why you pulled me into this discussion in the first place. Because I liked a post suggesting that good software takes time to build? Did I compare FP to a cathedral anywhere? So liking a post like that is enough for you to label FP as a "different flavor of shit"? I stand behind everything I say, comment on or support on twitter, including my criticism of the current state of software. I usually try to take a humble stance unless I'm provoked by others (usually vibe/clean/... coders). File Pilot is still in beta and if I didn't need to monetize it at this stage (after self funding it for the first three years), I would probably still keep it in closed testing. Also, FP has no affiliation with BSC. File Pilot started years before it. However I support their initiative because we share many of the same philosophies regarding the state of software. That's why I spoke there and that's why I'm attending again this year. Because people there are genuinely interested in computers and programming and they're trying to innovate and build new products, regardless of how much time it takes. While AI programmers usually brag about how many lines of code they produce each day (without reading them).

@LubaRaphael replying to you separate from the thread because @rfleury blocked me and I can't reply in your original reply: Yes, I do realize both products are alpha/beta. And I paid $200 to support the maker through the beta (and I'd pay for RADDBG too). But as I said: You dish out criticism about performance / bugs / stability, be a man and take some criticism on that same subject. That's it... The arrogance of it all sorta hit me the wrong way, and I mentioned how terrible of an experience *I* personally had from interacting with their, supposedly better, software. That being said, I do believe that the approach *could* yield better software (hence me paying $200 for FilePilot and not expecting a refund, ever... I truly hope he ships a banging v1 and will be periodically testing it). I think I'm not really saying anything extreme here.. If you're gonna liken all software but yours to a slum, and yours to a cathedral, expect to hear about the quality of it. Alpha or not, nobody pulled you by the tongue. Is that unreasonable? You tell me. Also: Didn't expect a block for criticism from someone who made harsh criticism their trademark post style on X (Ryan)

As for raddebugger, you're likely right about me conflating incomplete and incorrect a bit. But if we're going to be championing "better software", we should also accept that figuring out a business approach to it that meets the test of reality (being usable IRL) matters. That being said, I really am baffled by ryan blocking me, because as I said, I didn't expect someone who literally made a brand of insulting people on X to be so sensitive to a grumpy Tweet.

Already reported. Patiently waiting for it to mature & will try it again once a few versions pass (maybe a v1.0 one day?). And rooting for it to be a massive success for him financially too. I wouldn't even mention it in public on X if it wasn't for my feed being absolutely filled to the brim with very rude people saying very rude things to others while touting FilePilot as their pinnacle of software (and imagine my feeling about that while it's so unusable for me)

I actually wanted it to be good so bad that for a while I purged my machine of File Explorer shortcuts, to *force* myself to use FilePilot by force of habit. It just wasn't good enough, because after interrupting my work with crashes and unbearable slowness, I'd always end up reaching back for File Explorer... Yes it's beta, yes I'll try it again at a later date.. but don't use it as an example of some sort of pinnacle please, while shitting on other people's honest work - because that's just nasty. And if you do, expect criticism from someone who really tried to use it and found it unusable.

As for "FilePilot is slow", for me it is, unbearably so. It takes 40s+ to load (still) for various initialization issues, right clicking and entering folders is far more sluggish than the admittedly shitty File Explorer, and it often crashes, freezes and does other things that disrupt my flow. I genuinely tried it like 10 times, and for the 10th time it wasn't ready to use.. so I put it away and wait more. I find the "bad faith" accusations baffling, since I did pay for the most generous license I could *KNOWING* it might be never done (as single person projects often end up), just to support the developer. A grumpy customer who paid is a customer who paid.. vilifying them on X is not the way. And the *only* reason I would ever speak up about this on X is because my feed gets periodically flooded with people like @rfleury and his followers quite aggressively and arrogantly insulting others, and shitting on their work, while citing FilePilot, among other projects, as the pinnacle of all software. Build good software.. yes. I'll pay you & support you - but don't make it a license to be an asshole and shit on others en masse. If you do, expect your own bugs to be scrutinized. And for me as a user (and I could be the 1%, or the %10, or the 0.01%, I don't know ...), those pieces of software are yet unusable and impractical, however high quality they might see themselves as from certain points of view.

Automatic vs Manual Programming is a deceiving framing. Nobody does it manually. We have compilers that code for you in assembly. Thousands lines codegens are a thing in many serious projects for ages. It all has been solved long time ago. You just don't know what programming is.

@Kknewkles I think it’s much more than 1% cases.. just take a look at the bug reports in the Discord… Again: only a problem if they decide to also get arrogant and shit on everyone else. Otherwise, take my money and I hope that it gets better and I can use it one day.

@etodanik Yeah. There's dozens of you. Singular developers utilizing 1000x less man-hours and 1000000x less funds creating software that fails in 1% of cases for 1% of users is "the same shit but different" vs thousands of devs and millions of dollars, that fails in 90% of cases. SURE.

@rfleury apparently can't take the heat he constantly dishes out, since he blocked me for calling FilePilot slow and RADDBG unusable. So, I'll just answer you here @Kknewkles , because you asked: A) Yes, I submitted bug reports on Discord. B) One example reason why File Pilot was catastrophically slow on my machine is that it doesn't know how to work with network attached drives and external drives, and waits for *every single one of them* to fully initialize and return metadata when starting up, leaving me with constant random 40s waits. Another example: Right clicking in FilePilot takes almost a second Another example: Opening a big folder on an SSD makes the app freeze foa long time I could go on and on. FilePilot is an unpolished, slow, buggy app. C) The above wouldn't matter, UNLESS, the authors of those apps went on X and arrogantly shat on every single other developer, thinking that their myopic definition of "Better Software" (even the idea that @rfleury was so convinced that FilePilot is not slow.. because what.. it does immediate mode UI?) makes it OK. I wish you weren't so bad at taking criticism, @rfleury , while being so quick to dish it. But I guess that's who you are. Would've had fun discussing this stuff with you. Either way. At least now I'll have one less arrogant person shitting on others in my feed?

What's in this beta: * Optimizations for faster frame rate, especially on lower-end devices! (60fps on most levels on Steam Deck) * A new, lower-profile graphics setting "Very Performance" that can be used on these platforms to achieve these frame rates (or better battery life). * Increased compatibility with older GPUs and systems with less RAM. (Still no shader model 6.5 support, but we are looking at this). * Separate volume controls for music, sound effects and character voice * Control vsync, frame rate cap, and antialiasing mode from the Graphics submenu. * Switch the text language dynamically from the menu without having to fiddle with Steam settings ... * And many more!

@Kknewkles Not being able to use ANY of the software that's supposed to be "better" is IMHO of substance... But I digress. Have a nice day.

@etodanik Dude... you're starting to annoy me as well. He's not afraid of you. He isn't afraid of your criticisms. You haven't said anything of substance about RAD Debugger, where your use case was again, something niche. He correctly marked you as a source of noise, that's why he blocked.

Maybe :) You could be right. And it's interesting to discuss that with you & later think about it. Ryan, on the other hand, just blocked me like a little coward. Zero respect for people who pretend to be contrarian thinkers and dish out criticism, but can't stand to be criticized back.

@etodanik They shit on cases that are fucked beyond belief for a vast majority of users. You think your criticism, which matches a minute amount of cases has the same weight. It just doesn't.

Also, if you go to the bug reporting section on Discord, you'll see that there are terrible performance issues beyond my specific ones. Crashes, launch delays (not related to remote drives), issues with large directory listing that are still slower than File Explorer. Again, that's FINE! And TBH I think I have a problem with @rfleury 's approach more than Vjekoslav's. I didn't see Vjekoslav parading as much as Ryan and just shitting on everyone from a high horse. But honestly.. you wanna criticize everyone? Well, be a man and be able to take some criticism too, without blocking me like a coward at the first sight of contrarian thinking.

@Kknewkles The fix would be making some metadata fetching asynchronous. But it makes things unusable for me, because I have quite a few external and remote drives due to working heavily with Unreal Engine (multiple versions from source for CI/CD - many TBs of data)

He can shit all he wants, and you have the right to not accept my angry arguments. The fact is still there: That for NOW , the shitty Windows File Explorer is usable, his software isn't. So I reserve the right and ability to point that out. If you can't take criticism, don't dish it out. Isn't that fair?

@etodanik Vjekoslav rightly shits on Windows because the goddamn File Explorer is slow even with local disks. On my local NVME drive, in my folders, where Explorer chugs, FP flies. So no, I don't accept your angry arguments.

Could be, although, rumor was that "The Machinery" was actually shut down because Autodesk threatened to sue for copyright infringement on Bitsquid (that they bought and renamed to Stingray)... I think the founders were even touting, at first, that they'll be rebuilding things very much in the same way Bitsquid was built
