It’s over. The #BlueJays have lost Game 7 of the World Series to the Dodgers, 5-4, in 11 innings. This dream season, in which this team captured the hearts and imaginations of Canadians like we haven’t seen since 1993, ends in unbelievable heartbreak.

@TaraSlone Is this about Simmons? If I’m Pelley or Chayka I’d much rather have that get asked to my face and be given a chance to respond instead of having Steve hide behind it in a column. Not even close

I am all for asking the difficult questions when necessary. But there is a way to address hard topics without being so nasty and offensive. You want to spout off like that, save it for your column. Unconscionable behavior IMO.

@JoshThomasRepEX Not trying to say the tiebreaker is a gotcha, just trying to point out that even with all that, there wasn’t a team at like 1-17 that would have pushed them in no matter what

@evan_cooke Probably was a fantuz year. Yeah, they'd miss bases on the tie breaker rules of the day (which have changed) identical 6-12 makes it. So one shit team punished, one shit team makes it. Im not sure that's the gotcha you think it is. Look at last year's standings. Toronto .289

Ticats started 0-6, won 5 in a row over a stretch. Missed on last play of the year. Dropped field goal hold by Andy Fantuz. Under this format, there is no NEED for them to win any of those games. They get rewarded for starting 0-6. Those 6 losses do not matter. Jesus Christ.
Evan Cooke@evan_cooke

@JoshThomasRepEX But 1-win teams won’t make the playoffs. And starters won’t be in Cancun during the season. Inventing insane hyperbolic hypotheticals so that you can be outraged over things that’ll never happen doesn’t strengthen any of the legitimate arguments that exist over this flawed format

@JoshThomasRepEX Tbh seeing last year highlights for me how badly I still want an east coast expansion team. Looking back at those records, 8/10 teams becomes more platable

@evan_cooke Toronto makes the playoffs at 5-13 and .278 win % they either get a sub .500 team, or a barely scraping .500 team. Please don't try to tell me that isn't a sick joke. #CFL

@JoshThomasRepEX I think 2012 was still a Fantuz year? Certainly in the ballpark. But my only point about 2012 is that even with the new rules, the Cats would still miss the playoffs 🤷‍♂️

@evan_cooke I was young, Fantuz only spent a couple years with the Cats, but might have been 2012. This was the standings, I cant find a list of their games from that year. I think the crossover was still alive. I know 100% the fantuz drop was to go to the playoffs. This is bush enough.

@JoshThomasRepEX I assumed Cancun was a euphemism for resting all the starters - but if you’re not going to debate somewhat literally, no - I don’t have a way of knowing exactly what argument you’re making. FWIW, I can’t find the season you’re talking about. 2012?

There's a real life scenario for you dude, since you have to be directly literal about everything and cannot see there is no difference between a trip to Cancun and just starting the year shit. 0-6 is 0-6. and this format wouldn't punish them at all for going a dog shit 0-6.

@JoshThomasRepEX Lol, I’ve not once said you should pretend nothing has changed. Or that the value of playoffs hasn’t decreased. I’m saying that arguments based on things that might actually happen are effective - and arguments based on things that won’t, aren’t

@evan_cooke You want me to pretend nothing has changed and the value of the football isn't diminished. It is. There was a year hamilton started 0-6, won 5 in a row, missed playoffs on last play of the year. They NEEDED to be better early. Under this format, they get an unearned berth.

I simply don't understand how football fans aren't diagusted by this. 18 meaningless seeding games. Send your starters to Cancun, who cares, everybody gets a participation berth in the Kumbayah CFL. Playoffs need not be earned. A glorified 18 week pre season. disgusting. 🤢🤮
Paul Woods@pxw13

I'm much more strongly in favour of the rule changes announced last fall and the format changes announced this week than Ravi is, but this is a good thread that explains why even someone with some reservations is willing to wait and see rather than whine and complain.

@evan_cooke It isn't that they WILL coast. It's the fact you're able to. One win to make the playoffs under this format. One. That's asinine and you know it.

@JoshThomasRepEX @pxw13 Last thing: allowing a team to win a game by missing a field goal is far, far more bushleague than letting 8 teams into the playoffs. The CFL appealing to football elitists is a ship that sailed a loooong time ago

@pxw13 @evan_cooke No other football league in the world puts 90% of its teams in the playoffs and calls it professional. Look at these numbers. I'm supposed to care about 4 extra games of revenue when you gave me reason not to care about 18? 90% chance you have a 4 win path to the GC regardless.

Still can't get over this lie. Terrible teams go on 3 game streaks all the time. 9th place beats the eventual GC champion, often. No skill involved anymore. Get hot for 3 weeks and win the Grey Cup. All in the name of a few extra dollars. Gross. Simply fcking gross.
John Bender@johnw_bender

@JoshThomasRepEX If you go on the road and win 3 games at some of the CFLs best teams and then win the Grey Cup. That's a legendary run. It's unlikely it'll ever happen

@JoshThomasRepEX @pxw13 Sorry but “players don’t give a shit about playoff gate” and “they just want to get that bonus” is a direct contradiction lol. Money isn’t all they care about, but they absolutely care about money

@pxw13 @evan_cooke No. I see no incentive to play 18 seeding games. Football players don't give a single shit about playoff gate. They care about the easiest path to a championship bonus. 3rd and 8th have the same path - 1 home game. No reason to break your body for a 3rd place spot. Cruise.

@JoshThomasRepEX @pxw13 But the truth is in the numbers. Yes, there’s unfortunately a lower incentive to finish third in your division instead of fourth, or sixth in the league instead of seventh. But that doesn’t mean the incentive is completely eliminated either. The stats say that’s not debatable 🤷‍♂️

@JoshThomasRepEX I get it. 90% of the league making the playoffs stinks. No putting lipstick on that pig. All I’m saying is even in spite of that, history shows the odds of a 7 or 8 (even 6!) seed actually winning a Grey Cup are basically still 0 and it’s not a hypothetical hill ppl should die on

@evan_cooke Sure. So let's award the bad teams with a participation berth in the name of 4 extra playoff games? A pro league with an 18 game round robin where all but one team makes it? Any other league in the world, fans laugh you out of the building. Only the CFL would even consider it.

@evan_cooke @Farkell83 @ArashMadani They’ve gotten Corbin and Scherzer to combine for 3 runs in pretty much 12 innings and the team combined to score 3 runs themselves in those games. They lost and Hoffman didn’t pitch. Hoffman is irrelevant right now to me. They’ve been dogshit with the bats almost all year.
