On the blocked independence petition, Premier Smith disputes the ruling, saying the duty to consult First Nations applies to specific projects like pipelines. "This ruling is not clear, and so we think it may be incorrect in law and we will be appealing it."

Premier Smith says it shouldn't be up to a single, unelected Trudeau-appointed judge should overrule the 700K Albertans who want a separation referendum. She also suggests she would appeal this all the way to the Supreme Court.

Alberta's chronically aggrieved indigenous chiefs, who opposed the independence petition, also oppose Smith's efforts to quell an independence movement through getting pipelines built. The premier will truly never win with them.

Nothing in Justice Leonard’s decision prohibits separatists from running a separatist party with a separatist platform in the next general election. Democracy lives through long established processes for democratic participation. Why won’t separatists run on a separatist platform in a general election?

Alberta must consult indigenous people on independence. Let's extend the consultation period to October 19 of this year. Then we can have every indigenous citizen over 18 years of age vote on the issue that day. Along with every other Alberta citizen.
