This system doesn't make for good gameplay, and it actually creates more needless repetition and unfortunately a lot of gamers, notably console gamers still attached to the sunk cost of their PS5 play their games this way. Someone like DarkSydePhil would start this encounter by shooting at the air around enemies, not realize there are explosive barrels, miss them on a separate try, miss one out of 3, and reset back to the checkpoint every time. When Japanese game devs are thinking "k what do western gamers like," they're unfortunately going to box all of them together in one corner and advance graphics over everything else while doing shit like this where the gameplay has yellow paint everywhere, a checkpoint every 10 seconds, the lack of an inventory management system, and extremely scripted encounters that could only deviate based on whether they're cutscenes that start with setpieces or real time cutscenes waiting on player input. It's another L inside gamers mouths and it's an excellent argument for gatekeeping.
