Sometimes I feel like putting my entire next years income of 50,000$ into $VOO and just let it ride for the next 30 years. I’m 31 right now, would this be a good idea?

You may not like it, but this is the best politician in the world right now. Within 6 months of being sworn in he has: • Balanced a massive budget deficit. • Produced the lowest murder rate in NYC history. • Introduced a pilot program for free childcare. • Has collected $100 million in fines from landlords for abhorrent living conditions. - Lost ZERO billionaires!

Though the people hassling the poor guy was a jerk, I would say no he should not have pulled a gun. That became evidence when you realize he had friends. This guy could’ve been shot by his buddy there could’ve been all sorts of consequences. so was the one guy annoying, yes, but the guy should’ve just walked away or abandoned his cart. Otherwise if the black guy would’ve escalated, the white guy with the gun would had terrible options left. And if ultimately, he killed an unarmed person, she may ultimately go to prison. I obviously wasn’t there but as a gun owner I believe ultimately the person that is armed has the most responsibility regardless of what you can and cannot do legally

In the richest country on earth, young people shouldn't have to wait until age 40 to buy a home - 12 years after first-time buyers in 1991. Young people shouldn't have to fear a lower standard of living than their parents. We need an economy that works for all, not just the 1%.

Big claims and big words (destabilizations, displacements, and exploits ) and no evidence to support this. The vast majority of homes and investments are owned by individual people and small time landlords. The same people you were saying are victims are the same people that have one Airbnb that they’re renting to supplement their income. You want to help affordability look what Texas is doing. They essentially destroyed the rental market there.

Someone can certainly *make* a billion dollars. That’s not the same thing as earning. Growing fast and disrupting markets also often means chasing and wielding market power, political influence, and scale. Take Airbnb. They heavily lobby politicians against passing housing laws to protect working class residents because it’s bad for their business model. Airbnb could not exist at its current scale and size without the housing market destabilizations, displacements, and exploits that are supercharging the evictions of working people everywhere from Puerto Rico to Jackson Hole. Now young people are planning for a future where they will never be able to afford to own a home while others have 20 and live off renting it out to them at extortionate rates with zero protections. Yes, a tiny amount of people can make billions of dollars doing that. And millions of everyday Americans are bearing the cost.
Paul Graham@paulg

Sure you can earn a billion dollars. I've been teaching people how to do it for 20 years. The way you do it is to start a company that grows fast. You don't have to do anything bad to make a company grow fast. You just have to make something people want. paulgraham.com/ace.html

Section 7 of the Clayton Act bans mergers that may (key word) substantially lessen competition or create a monopoly. That’s the law the judge said the JetBlue-Spirit deal violated. He ruled that removing Spirit — the aggressive low-cost airline — would let fares rise on hundreds of routes. So even though the merger wouldn’t create a monopoly, the court found it would still hurt competition enough to break the law. The analysis the court relied on is always subjective because there are two sides. There were material problems with the state’s arguments. This has happened many times before.

Since the paid MAGA influencer losers are executing their marching orders on this Spirit story, let’s inject some reality. The Biden administration didn’t stop any Spirit mergers. The issue went to trial and a judge ruled that a Jet Blue/Spirit merger violated US antitrust laws, and would likely increase prices on consumers. The courts ruled, correctly, that the merger violated the law and would hurt Americans. So, fellow Americans: what MAGA is really saying is they don’t give a shit about the law, and they don’t give a shit if you had to pay more to fly. politico.com/news/2024/01/1…

The court’s main flaw was over-relying on the Spirit Effect — the idea that Spirit’s rock-bottom fares uniquely forced everyone else to cut prices by around 21%. They treated Spirit as an irreplaceable maverick that would stay strong forever. On market share, they flagged 183 routes where the merger would spike concentration, but the judge himself admitted the government’s economist messed up: he didn’t group nearby airports right, used outdated data, and never checked if other low-cost carriers would jump in. They dismissed the idea that Frontier or other ULCCs would quickly add flights to fill the gap, saying it would take years and they couldn’t match Spirit’s aggressive pricing. That assumption turned out wrong

The Biden administration’s DOJ, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, sued to block the JetBlue-Spirit merger in 2023, arguing it would eliminate a major low-cost carrier and raise fares. Senator Elizabeth Warren publicly pushed for the block, calling it a “Biden win for flyers” after the deal died. The Department of Transportation, led by Pete Buttigieg, backed the lawsuit and said they’d deny the airlines’ route transfers. That didn’t have to happen. The AG could’ve just told their department to stand down.
