@misscrisp So user hostile! I downloaded my archives when the layoffs happened — just in case — and well, here we are. I've basically moved on from Twitter ever since and don't miss the few posts or replies (like this one) I've done since those archives were created. 🤷‍♂️

@misscrisp Bottom of the left navigation in More -> Settings and Support -> Settings and Privacy... But good luck, it hasn't worked for months. If you do manage to get an archive there are various tools to covert it, or publish on your own web server like this: tinysubversions.com/twitter-archiv…

I'm currently helping a widow wrangle her deceased partner's web properties. Navigating settings, DNS, or WHOIS details are overwhelming my client. Plus a dead email account is involved, which locks her out. Don't neglect WHOIS updates + set a backup plan with loved ones!

you probably remember this photograph. it's one of the more iconic of the awful images of the nazi torch march at UVA on august 11, 2017. on august 12, the man in the center was elated to see himself on the cover of papers across the county. today, i can tell you he is dead.

@Sonya Days after I re-discovered this resource in my overloaded bookmark database I started on a project that could benefit from the diarrhea icon. 🙃

Don't take it personally if you just got laid off, it was to make the line go up. The line must always go up. If people think the line is going to go down you must make a human sacrifice. We are all subservient to the line.

To understand why layoffs are happening at Big Tech, it's not enough to understand if a company is profitable. Microsoft's profits (net income) for 2022 was at $72B: this is above the *revenue* it had every year before 2012. Layoffs have to do with shareholder's expectations:

@workbench_tv I hear you — I also hand-code and use JavaScript only when absolutely necessary. I tinker with frameworks and they do have their place, but I always go back to hand-coding. Plus CSS features and support are evolving faster than ever — the stuff we can do now is outstanding.

@evilpeacock True. I just tend to not bother when I know for a fact you're probably using a computer to view something vs a phone. But I hand-code everything, so I'm quite an exception these days.

I would LOVE an AE competitor. I would even pay $2K for a permanent license for a program that solves my problems and is modern. But I don't know anything about this company. I don't know if they're going to be around in 5 years. And their pricing doesn't reflect that one bit.

@workbench_tv "Mobile-first" is still a solid strategy, but these days it's not *that* hard to repurpose proportions for desktop using the same markup and assets. Mobile design skew on desktop is likely driven by whatever site CMS or template foundation may have been used.

@evilpeacock 💯 It also feels like it's proportioned for phones, but their product is desktop so that's odd. Granted, Google et al force you to do that if you want better rankings, even if nothing your site makes sense on phones.

@workbench_tv Good brand design matters; As someone who has photographed staff and retouched/cloned backgrounds to death I am also put off by the photos. The whole site's art direction isn't great — very first draft, odd proportions, etc. Could be a case of great devs with poor design. 🤷‍♂️

The founders photos on the website look like a Midjourney prompt. They've clearly been cut out and put on backgrounds. It's all very weird.

It's official: Twitter's new rules for accessing their API forbid creating third-party clients. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. theverge.com/2023/1/19/2356…

Days after dropping some 3rd-party clients w/o warning or response, Twitter retcons their terms-of-service to disallow developers to create apps. All this user/developer user hostility would piss me off even if I hadn't been a #tweetbot user since 2012. engadget.com/twitter-new-de…

@benedictevans @jnack I always share this tip whenever I see someone I work with manually adding images to slides. This may well be one of the most rewarding tips you can give someone working on a presentation.

@jnack @pbairdadobe Easy to miss: on macOS Preview can batch export PDF pages to image formats lickety-split. The Keynote drag-and-drop to batch fully scaled images to slides, then export to PPT is an old-skool hack; I'm surprised PPT still hasn't added that functionality.

@pbairdadobe Ah, I wish I'd thought to try that (or do ask you a few hours ago 😛). Just tried it and it works... kinda (modulo fonts no longer matching & maybe a few other glitches).
