@Paul_Heron_ That wasn't a failure of future Conservative governments. It was the intellectual failure of Thatcher and Joseph to realise that a revolutionary change to employment and industry would inevitably herald a revolutionary change to all parts of British social life.

Reminder that Keith Joseph handed out copies of Martin Wiener’s English Culture and the Decline of the Industrial Spirit: 1850–1980 to Mrs T’s cabinet. A heroic but doomed attempt to school the Tory Party on economic realism, get it to realise man cannot live on finance alone.
Mark W.@DurhamWASP

“If there is a single most deplorable intellectual failing on the conservative side, it lies in reducing every question of law, constitution, culture and society to a question of economics.” Sir Roger Scruton

It is actually somehow worse for socialist politics if Unite disaffiliates from Labour without affiliating with any new party, than if the status-quo continues. Without new affiliation, they would depoliticise organised labour even further. Class politics requires a class party.
Saul Staniforth@SaulStaniforth

.@UniteSharon is asked, could Unite disaffiliate from the Labour Party? I'm a Unite member and I support disaffiliation.

@broseph_stalin Personally, I see nationalising strategic resources/national autonomy fitting pretty neatly into the developmentalism of the post-colonial national bourgeoisie and the Non-Aligned Movement. Though obviously some of these leaders, excluding Lumumba, called themselves socialist.

@ewanj334 He avoided labels other than pan-africanist true but his policies were a socialist orientation. He advocated for the nationalization of Congo’s natural resources, greater economic independence from former colonial powers, and wealth distribution.

Patrice Lumumba was the first democratically elected prime minister of Congo. A socialist who sought to nationalise the country’s vast resources. A US-backed coup kidnapped him, tortured him, and shot him, then dissolved his body in acid. All that remained was a single tooth.

The reason it's important to clarify this is that Erdoğan regime, a NATO member highly unlikely to rupture with the US, will attempt to manufacture public support in a position of weakness through the blatantly false idea that it serves as a bulwark against Israeli power.

Israel and the US will almost certainly put great effort in crippling the ability of Turkey to project power in the Middle East, but that doesn't mean Erdoğan is "in the crosshairs". Being in "the crosshairs" looks like Balkanisation, carpet bombing and genocide.

As an Iranian, I would love to celebrate the death of that piece of shit. But I feel I debase myself by cheering an execution carried out by a vulgar genocide state, then circulated for applause across the smug timelines of European racists. Sorry. But fuck all of it.

@Alejandro_SocEU @IISheldonII It's 2026 and you somehow haven't gotten the message that a liberal multilateral world order led by the United States is irretrievably dead.

@IISheldonII Idealism is too good in foreign policy to be entirely true. Even so, we must never attempt to abandon or renounce multilateralism. And yet, there is no more noble action than helping peoples who are fighting for their freedom against a tyrannical regime.

She's way better than I thought. A truly based foreign policy: Euro-Atlantic, proactive, defender of democratic values, helping defenseless peoples and standing up for human rights. Of course, she's not suitable for tankies, who keep proving once again to be as utterly idiotic as the right-wing extremists.
Drop Site@DropSiteNews

⭕️ LEAKED Email: Kat Abughazeleh “firmly an interventionist,” foreign policy adviser says Kat Abughazaleh, a socialist Democratic candidate in Illinois’ 9th District and one of the only Palestinian-Americans seeking office in 2026, was described by her national security adviser as “firmly an interventionist” who “won’t stop until Russia is made to pay for its crimes,” in written responses detailing her foreign policy vision, obtained by Drop Site. Ben Mermel wrote in an email to a Washington-based progressive foreign policy activist that Abughazaleh believes “the world is better off when America takes a leading role” and that the U.S. has “an obligation to support pro-democracy movements around the world, from Iran to Venezuela.” He added that “Kat wholly supports the National Endowment for Democracy, as well as its affiliated organizations (NDI, IRI, and the AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center),” and said Congress should expand tools “from sanctions to NGO support” to advance those efforts without always resorting to “kinetic force.” The DC-based activist had written to Mermel saying he had noticed unusually hawkish language on the campaign website related to Ukraine and Taiwan and was looking for clarification. In his response, Mermel said that on Taiwan she would amend the Taiwan Relations Act by “dropping our strategic ambiguity” and make clear the U.S. would counter Chinese aggression “with force,” arguing the region now requires “a firmer hand.” On Ukraine, Mermel wrote she would “hold the line,” support “funding the Ukrainian war effort to the hilt,” back long-range strikes on Russian strategic targets, deploy additional U.S. “air, naval, and ground assets” to NATO’s front line, and that “She supports the seizure and redistribution of Russian assets in Europe and the United States, for the purpose of financing the war effort.” Abughazaleh did not respond to a request for comment, but a source close to the campaign told Drop Site that the adviser’s email did not accurately represent her views, saying, “Kat is committed to taking on authoritarianism but is vehemently against the military industrial complex and the continuation of failed US intervention approaches.” Abughazaleh has consistently argued against U.S. support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza and, at a recent forum, said she opposes U.S. strikes on Iran. Mermel in 2024 attended a pro-Israel protest held to counter the encampment at George Washington University. He has been Abughazaleh’s National Security Adviser since July 2025, according to Legistorm. The full exchange is posted below. Watch the report on Breaking Points:

Today, I’m releasing the City’s preliminary budget. After years of fiscal mismanagement, we’re staring at a $5.4 billion budget gap — and two paths. One: Albany can raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy and the most profitable corporations and address the fiscal imbalance between our city and state. The other, a last resort: balance the budget on the backs of working people using the only tools at the City's disposal.   The first path matches a structural crisis with a sustainable and fair solution. I know where I stand. New Yorkers voted for bold change and competent leadership. We will deliver both, and we look forward to partnering with Albany to protect working New Yorkers.

@SocDemGeorge It doesn't though. It's made up. Any supposed parliamentary sovereignty is irrelevant if we are materially subordinated to American hegemony and finance capital. The words of English common law don't constitute real sovereignty. Control of currency, trade, and military power do.

This and countless other examples show how dependent liberalism is on pro-NATO politics and national loyalism in their arguments against the left. Its impossible to placate this stuff. Socialists must break with the discourse of the nation-state and imperialism.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Sir Keir Starmer will claim on Saturday that Reform UK and the Greens are ideological extremists who would undermine Britain’s national security and make war in Europe more likely In his strongest attack yet on Labour’s new electoral rivals, the prime minister will use a speech in Munich to warn that, for all their differences, both parties are “soft on Russia and weak on Nato” He will argue their approach would lead only to “division and capitulation” and the result would be that “the lamps would go out across Europe once again” His comments are a direct quote of Sir Edward Grey, a former British foreign secretary, who, on the eve of the First World War, warned that the lamps were “going out” all over Europe “It’s striking that the different ends of the spectrum share so much,” Starmer will say. “Soft on Russia and weak on Nato — if not outright opposed. [They are] determined to sacrifice the longstanding relationships that we want and need to build on the altar of their ideology. The future they offer is one of division and then capitulation. The lamps would go out across Europe once again.” He will add: “We must level with the public and build consent for the decisions we will have to take to keep us all safe. Because if we don’t, the peddlers of easy answers on the extreme left and the extreme right are ready. They will offer their solutions instead.” Sir Keir Starmer: Vote Reform or Green and risk war thetimes.com/article/ad7fe8…

@labourball How is opposing increases in defence spending, which have been specifically demanded by Washington to serve their interests, inconsistent with opposing the US blockade on Cuba? Are you implying that increasing defence spending could conceivably defend Cuba or break the blockade?
