@flexibledragnet @TMFScottP But it's equitable for all road users. A road user charge based on weight of car and distance travelled will raise more tax (EVs not paying fuel excise) that could then be used to replenish fuel reserves - thay are required for transport / agri / etc.

@exp_policy @TMFScottP Road user charge (inevitable) won’t help poor people unless it raises less overall revenue than excise (unlikely). Enjoy your day. 🙏

On the politics of Taylor's call for an excise cut: Morrison's was justified. This is not. My view isn't party-political. But also: If you criticised the energy rebate, you can't support Taylor, here. And if you supported the energy rebate, you can't criticise Taylor.

@TMFScottP @flexibledragnet Maybe the compromise is a full fuel excise cut for transport companies and agriculture. Otherwise our economy is going to stagnate even further. And, fuel excise cut will have flow on effects for reducing cost of goods.

@flexibledragnet @TMFScottP I consider the role of government to have holistic responses to emerging issues. The excise is under their control, and can be cut to ease the (ongoing) pain on the economy. Best case, they rush through a road user charge per km and get rid of fuel excise completely.

@exp_policy @TMFScottP Where do you get that data from? If I look at the marine tracker then are multiple tanker en-route to Australia (although no information about what’s in them, if anything). If we are now in a supply crunch, no use cutting excise, we want to reduce demand.

@flexibledragnet @TMFScottP That would have worked a week ago. Price is now supply based, with only 1 oil tanker arriving in the immediate future. Okay, to make it equitable, a road user charge per km should instantly replace fuel excise. But thats long-term, short-term we need this to continue the economy

@exp_policy @TMFScottP But it’s not equitable. It doesn’t differentiate between rich people with diesels or poor people with EVs. If you want to lower the price, reduce the demand. No containers, 50 litres a sale.

Wow! Common sense prevails. Imagine that, men are generally physically bigger, stronger, and faster. I could have told you that even before I finished an exercise-based PhD.

@flexibledragnet @TMFScottP Because it is an easy and equitable approach that allows the government to save face following their monumental mess-up regarding fuel reserves. Any cut should be time limited until there is a comprehensive approach to the current crisis.

@exp_policy @TMFScottP No. But there is no sense to cut fuel excise. That send exactly the wrong message. Why would you cut fuel excise for a diesel Mercedes GLS? If people need targeted assistance that can be done in other ways.

@flexibledragnet @TMFScottP There will, without a doubt, be a road user charge that replaces the fuel excise. In the interim, do you want to tell people already struggling to live pay check to pay check, working 2-3 jobs, to "add more debt to your life!". Because that is not good will. Just FYI, im pro-EVs

Watching Wayne Swan on Today and thinking "this guy is an absolute moron". The failbo plan is to plan a meeting to plan meetings - not to plan a solution for the fuel crisis. Not to mention the lack of planning for crisis like these. Absolute shambles.

@CrazedCapital @h2walsh @bowtiedstocks Many Australian PhD grads go on to US tech / pharma / engineering companies almost directly following graduation. Why? Because QoL is significantly higher in the US when your starting salary is 120-180K USD. Especially in low income states (e.g., Texas).

In my opinion Australia doesn’t reward hard working intelligent and educated people enough Stop go union operatives pulling in more than qualified medical or engineering professionals Tax the high earners to death so we can pay people to walk dogs for $90 an hour as NDIS carer dog walkers I can see why we suffer a ‘brain drain’ where our best and brightest leave for greener pastures where their skills are better valued by the marketplace And those that stay just wanna play leveraged propadee roulette, because let’s face it we’re not that bright Not a serious country

@bowtiedstocks A lot of colleagues of mine (top 1% performing Masters/PhD grads) struggled to find private businesses willing to take them on at a fair market wage (~100-120k). They either went Public for security & wage, or moved overseas & 2-3x'd what would be a 'fair market wage' in Aus.

The ABC doesn't support free speech. It's an agenda driven narrative being sold as community television. Defunding the ABC doesn't harm free speech, it forces the ABC to a subscription model, and if it wants to survive, it needs to produce content that Australians want to see. This means the ABC will support free speech to ensure that it can produce content that will be be watched. If anything, defunding the ABC helps free speech as it removes government intervention through government support. It becomes reliant on the community, not who's in charge of the government.

Spoke to my neighbour today, he's semi-retired, a home owner, reasonably wealthy. Talking about his project car led to fuel prices. He goes "i can't wait to vote this fucking corrupt gov out, and im a lifelong Labor voter". I said I'd be voting for Pauline, he replied "me too".

If, by small chance, @OneNationAus forms government next election, their first move should be to release ALL Labor financials for review publicly. And throw in a "holy shit its so much worse than we thought" with their media release. Cause @JEChalmers gives all PhDs a bad name.

I hope @OneNationAus continues with candidates like @GreenTyler27. I can't speak for others, but I do not want washed up Libs to be candidates who will ruin the party & momentum. Keep it local, focus on policy, and candidates who believe in ON values - not name recognition.
