No senior should have to pay property taxes. They worked hard all their life, paid their mortgage and when they retire they should not be afraid of losing it due to property taxes. This is not a one state issue, should be in all states.

On public land, we must maximize affordable housing. We desperately need more housing that working families can actually afford. We are pushing for a lot more affordable housing at the proposed Monitor Point in Greenpoint. Tune into the land use hearing tomorrow, May 27th.

Really, they should probably pay more in property taxes. Efficiently distributing housing is a far more important goal than ensuring Boomers can hang on to large houses that growing families need simply for sentimental reasons.

@moneymattie What’s cpi?

I agree. In fact, nobody who has paid off their mortgage should pay property taxes. If you own it, you shouldn’t be paying taxes on it over and over again.

@sunnyright Nothing left but a wonderful family, 30 patents, 2 engineering degrees from MIT, a farm with a peach orchard, a herd of Wagyu cattle, a dozen inventions in my head, a clucks capacitor roaming my fields, and investors lined up to back whatever I invent next.

Seniors should not be priced out of a house they already paid for because the area around them got more expensive. They didn’t suddenly get richer because Zillow says the house is worth more. Most of them are living on fixed income, paying higher insurance, higher utilities, higher groceries, and then the tax bill shows up like they somehow got a raise. People can argue all day about how to fund schools and services, and that part does matter. But making older homeowners keep rebuying the same house every year through property taxes is exactly why so many people feel like ownership is never really ownership.

There are millions of inexpensive homes that already exist in "walkable" neighborhoods This 2000sf home is $250k in Philadelphia. 4 blocks from major subway. The problem is that the safety & schools of neighborhood are such that very few people with means choose to live here

Some fun facts about the folly of permanently dedicating road infrastructure in a northern seasonal climate environment. NYC on average: •125 days of measurable rain • 29.8 inches of snow • 170-180 days with less than 12 hours of daylight • 110-120 days below 40 degrees • 20-40 thunderstorms per year
