I just finished Julian Gewirtz's excellent history of Chinese economic policymaking in the 1980s, in which he shows just how complex and contentious the early phases of "reform and opening up" were. For those interested in Party politics, this is an important book. @JulianGewirtz

“And now,” the Sphinx said, “I will ask the final riddle.” The woman, her face grim with determination, nodded. “What is a nutritious lunch you can give a child for camp, that needs neither refrigeration, nor to be heated up?” “Shit,” the woman said. The trap door opened.

Wow, it seems I was quite naive and far from Kaggle dramas recently. There "schools", which "train people to do kaggle" and guarantee silver medals, or money back. This link was posted today as an illustration, in IMC2022 forum. xiaohongshu.com/discovery/item…

A remarkable percentage of work as a software engineer is dealing with migrations, mostly data and service migrations. Yet, there isn't much content available out there. I found this writeup from @GergelyOrosz extremelly valuable: blog.pragmaticengineer.com/typical-migrat…

The funny part is that every single response to this is correct. Should you learn Python? Yeah. Should you learn K8s? Yeah. Should you focus on SQL? Yeah. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=310939…

So Shanghai is locked down and cases are still going up. 1. Everyone is still in surgical masks- local government could distribute KN95s, won't. Even though COVID was first declared airborne in China, and our scientists *know* it's airborne, average Chinese still think droplets.

We’ve seen lots of photos & videos of rioting, looting, police violence and general unrest in China over the past couple days, as pandemic restrictions in Shanghai, Jilin & other places become unbearable for countless people. A brief roundup here below:

A month into parental leave and I have never been so exhausted in my entire life. We have to feed every 2-3 hours, and I don’t get more than 5 hours of straight sleep at a time (if I’m lucky). Please tell me it gets better… 🥺😭 How do people do this with more than one kid?
