Yesterday, I drove from the farm to Mogadishu. I counted 17 Isbaaro roadblocks from Lambar 50 to Mogadishu set up by government forces. At each checkpoint, the soldiers demanded extortion money, and they allowed transport vehicles carrying farm produce to pass only after payment. The more army bases on the road is resulting more isbaaro roadblocks.

An interesting manifestation of Somali chauvinism is the refusal to blame Somali tuugo for their tuugonimo and instead cry foul at the ‘other’ who benefits from the tuugonimo because the tribe has to be protected!
