By all accounts slavery in the US was about as tame and vanilla as it comes. There is legitimate slavery going on in several parts of the world TODAY that is leagues more barbaric and brutal than US slavery ever was. European-born slavery as a whole was always the kindest, most moral iteration of the institution. Everywhere else through history it was far more grotesque.
