The FDNY joined the New York City Central Labor Council Wednesday to commemorate the 115th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, one of the deadliest fires in New York City's history. The fire, which started on the upper floors, spread rapidly and claimed the lives of 146 people—most of them women. More than 700 people were in the building at the time of the fire, many unable to escape due to locked exits, inadequate fire escapes, and no sprinklers. The fire became a turning point in labor and fire safety reform across the country, leading the FDNY to expand its efforts in fire safety education and drills in factories across all five boroughs. Today, the Department remains committed to ensuring that lessons learned from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire continue to shape fire prevention to protect all New Yorkers.

Passover begins before sundown on Wednesday, April 1. On Monday, FDNY officials held a roundtable with community leaders from across New York City to discuss fire safety tips ahead of the holiday.   Here are some reminders to celebrate safely with your family and friends:   ⚠️ Keep candles at least four feet away from curtains, draperies, decorations, blinds and bedding.   ⚠️ Never leave a burning candle unattended.   ⚠️ Never leave cooking food unattended.   ⚠️ Ensure flammable objects like paper towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils and decorations are kept a safe distance from the stove or any heat source.   ⚠️ Prevent spills and accidents by turning pot and pan handles inward so they can't be accidentally bumped or grabbed.

Every journey in EMS begins with a single step, and Monday morning, I saw so much promise in our newest recruits who took a step today and were sworn in as our next class of EMS trainees. Thirty-five years ago, I took the same pledge—beginning my journey as an EMT, not yet knowing the lives I would impact or the purpose I would find. EMS is more than a career—it’s a calling to serve people on some of the hardest days of their lives. The road ahead will challenge you, push you, and shape you—but it will also define you. Over the next several months, you will build the skills, strength and discipline to care for New Yorkers in their most critical moments. Your journey begins now.

It's March Madness 🏀 — and blocking shots is part of the game. But blocking a fire hydrant? That's never OK. Parking on fire hydrants is ILLEGAL in New York City and can delay first responders when seconds matter most. Keep hydrants clear so FDNY members can quickly get water on a fire. Don't park on fire hydrants.

Early Thursday evening, the FDNY responded to a 3-alarm fired at 1021 Avenue H in Brooklyn, bringing 63 units and 192 Firefighters, EMTs, and officers to the scene. Units arrived in under four minutes to find heavy fire through the roof of a commercial building. “First-arriving units encountered heavy fire through the roof, and additional alarms were quickly transmitted to bring the incident under control,” said Assistant Chief Joseph Duggan Jr. There are no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Thursday, 143 Probationary EMTs graduated from the EMS Academy. “As you graduate today, you become the heartbeat of our city’s frontline medical response,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “When you put on that uniform, you’re telling eight million people: I am here, and you are safe, and you are the living proof that our mission to protect New York never wavers.” The new EMTs will be assigned to units throughout New York City. 38 EMS members were also promoted during this ceremony. They were promoted to the ranks of Captain and Lieutenant. Chief Kathleen Knuth was also promoted to Assistant Chief of EMS Operations, the first woman to hold that title in Department history. “Today is not just a recognition of what you have done, it is a commitment to those you now lead. Your members are watching you for direction, consistency and support, and you are the strength they rely on when it matters most,” said Chief of EMS Operations Paul Miano.
