Fantastic article here by @nkalamb @TheNeuroTimes and Jay Smith on the mirage that the "student-athlete" concept represents in high-profile college athletics. Opinion | 'Student-Athlete’ Has Always Been a Lie chronicle.com/article/studen…

Suspended for selling merchandise in June that would have been permissible to sell in July, and never should have been prohibited in the first place without a wildly unjust cartel running college athletics. Way to go NCAA! espn.com/mens-college-b…

It takes courage to fight for what you believe in and fixing college sports needs all the courageous athletes it can get. @camimarch is a great example to follow. Way to go!

Not only can college athletes be pushed to easy majors because of athletic commitments, but the NCAA’s progress toward degree rules can also prevent athletes from switching majors without sacrificing their eligibility (especially highly-specialized majors).

Two words, “student athlete,” helped the NCAA build a decades-long system of exploitation. We dive into its inner workings on a new episode of #LevelPlayingField. Stream it tonight at 8pm ET on @hbomax.

College sports are back and all athletes know what that means: work weeks that last way longer than 20 hours in spite of NCAA rules that prohibit that from happening. Here’s how the numbers can be manipulated so athletes *technically* stay within the limit while working overtime:

NCAA could not conclude Baylor violated NCAA rules when it failed to report allegations of & address sexual & interpersonal violence committed on its campus. School gets 4 years probation & $5,000 fine

Updating the NCAA enforcement manual. UNC systemic academic fraud: Not a violation. Boise St letting freshmen sleep on players’ couches before school started: Violation. Baylor covering up sexual assaults by football players: Not a violation. Reselling textbooks: Violation.

In my ongoing crusade to discontinue use of the term “student athlete,” I wrote a book chapter that’s now in print. Very honored to have my name alongside such accomplished scholars!
Michael Butterworth@BurntO_Butterwo

Chapter 12 is from @LeverFever, who traces the NCAA's use of "student-athlete" as an "ideograph" [a term linking rhetoric/ideology]. She grounds this use in the myth of amateurism, and categorizes the NCAA's effects on athletes in terms of control, exploitation, and subjugation.

Interesting article by Victoria Jackson on how higher fixation is working very hard to keep from doing the right thing. Jackson is a historian at a NCAA member institution, and a former NCAA champion. chronicle.com/article/the-nc…
