🌱Hello, I'm Mark
🌱Hello, I'm Mark@LoveGrowingVeg·
Mrs T chuckled while we both had to carry my large containers of salad leaves to a greenhouse closer to the house. “Most people just buy bags from the supermarket” she says. One I’m not most people thankfully and two they ain’t going to enjoy a sandwich on homemade bread with homegrown cucumber and onion pickle as much as me 😋💚

@CarlBovisNature I was out walking in Nidderdale yesterday, I saw and heard curlews and lapwings, watched greylags courting, marvelled at the myriad birdsong, saw a buzzard eating some roadkill. And then, in the middle of nowhere in a wood I saw this pair of Christmas escapees, Turkeys

I once had to reassure a (very broke) man that I adored that a £50 ring was absolutely fine and that I wanted to marry him more than I wanted an expensive ring. Sure enough he proposed with said ring, I adored it, I showed it off to everyone, and it did not matter one bit how much it cost. This relationship didn’t work out for other external reasons but at least it wasn’t because I would accept nothing less than a mined 3ct ring. He should run.

@AlisonMoyet We have just encouraged an 84yo and an 82 yo to retire. The 84yo was virtually deaf, early dementia. 82yo had osteoporosis, dementia and losing her sight. They had become a liability but out of loyalty to them they were allowed to work even though the output was very diminished.

I see the proposal that retirent age should be raised to 75. My question is - Where are these jobs going to come from? Given that the young and mid-lifers alike are struggling to find work.

My kids were all born before the 2015 NHS infant immunisations started for Meningitis B. So to protect them in their teens, prior to university, it's private jabs or nothing. This is absolute madness.

@higgyboson I work in events. If I hadn't been paid furlough, we would have not kept up with mortgage payments and potentially lost the house. Millions of others would have been in same situation. It would have been a housing catastrophe.

Does anyone still believe that paying millions of people 80% of their wages to sit at home doing nothing for 19 months "for their own safety" made any sense when all the self employed people just carried on with their work regardless?

Every bomb dropped on an oil facility is a time bomb for the planet. It accelerates global warming. It destroys biodiversity. It poisons the air for humans who had nothing to do with the conflict. To the perpetrators:You are disgraceful. There is no 'winning when the planet loses

By your calculations a UK cow producing 10,000 litres of milk a year uses 4,000,000 litres of water, or 10.96 tons of water a day. This is miles out, and perhaps relates to (plentiful) water that falls on the field where the cow is grazing. Very different to pillaging Californian ground water. I usually am prepared to discuss nuance, but in this case, Dale, you’re wrong. By the way, I’m not a dairy farmer; I’m just better at maths and reality than you!

@kelleylowens I was supposed to read The Trumpet Major for Englis Lit. It was so boring, I hardly read any of it. The year before had had Pride & Prejudice, the year before that, Cider With Rosie, two fab books I have read since.

Every educator needs to keep this Flannery O'Connor gem in a back pocket for the next time a student complains about the relevance or boringness of an older book... “And if the student finds that this is not to his taste? Well, that is regrettable. Most regrettable. His taste should not be consulted; it is being formed.”

@SketchesbyBoze When my kids were 6 and 8, we gave up on the modern authors because the English was terrible. Read Enid Blyton, Ian Seraillier, Roald Dahl, E Nesbit moving on to Jane Austen. Consequently, my daughter writes beautifully descriptive sentences and really gets her point across.

Someone once told me that The Hobbit is too difficult a book for a child of twelve to read. The Hobbit, famously a children’s book. Fewer and fewer people are able to read in part because we continue to lower expectations. Kids in the 1940s were reading Defoe & Dickens.

It’s a flex that the hobbit was the first non-picture book I read in elementary school and I’ll take that flex with me to the grave
