Today would be my Dad’s 100 birthday. We’d never have heard the end of all the 0s+2s. He’d have been insufferable, strangers on the street would know about it, he’d linger in the amazingness of it for weeks. What I’d give to be part of his wonder, to go once more the meadow ways

On the day that brings great hope for the restaurant industry here’s a little glimpse of what Myrtle Allen was planning for her Ballymaloe restaurant on 22 January, 1969: ‘get chicken and duck for [the] cold table.’

@Russ_Parsons1 Can’t get the (same) winter sunshine here, but a few very gifted Irish knife makers around to fill your knife rack!

Two things I miss about California: Winter light and a full knife rack (sigh, just PART of the collection).

In English we say “Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr.” because we’re conditioned to think of people in terms of gender or status. In Irish we say “A chara” because interactions, even with strangers, are rooted in the assumption of friendship. Gaeilge > Béarla

@Killybegsgirl I love cleaning mussels & peeling eggs. I could do without having to wash up though.

Here we go... least favourite kitchen job of all time. I’ll go first, peeling cooked eggs & bearding & de-scaling mussels. Anyone got any jobs worse then these? There is nothing worse, am I right!?

As the L'Ecrivain building is sold this week it got me thinking of the great Irish restaurants that have come and gone. Ones I loved best are The Mermaid Café, Thornton's, The Tea Room in The Clarence and The Ivory Tower in Cork. How about you?
