Last week, our Senior Member, Rtd Justice Flavia Ssenoga Anglin, together with Dorothy Kabali, paid us a courtesy visit at the FIDA-Uganda secretariat . The visit was warm, engaging, and provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect and exchange ideas on our ongoing work and shared mission. We are especially grateful for the introduction to a potential donor based in the UK, which presents a promising opportunity to further support and expand our initiatives. It also reminded us of the unique strength and influence within our membership, and the important role it plays in advancing our collective goals. 🌟

“The reason we have gender equality and protections in our laws is because of international frameworks like CEDAW.” In her remarks, Dr. @BrendaAkia, Vice Chair and Rapporteur of the @UN CEDAW Committee, highlighted the critical role of global human rights mechanisms in shaping national laws and advancing the rights of women and girls, including those with disabilities. She emphasized that frameworks like CEDAW are not distant or abstract, they are powerful, legally binding tools that communities can use to hold governments accountable and drive real change. Dr. @BrendaAkia also emphasized the importance of grassroots voices, noting that the lived experiences and data shared by Community Legal Volunteers and civil society actors are essential in influencing international advocacy and accelerating action at national level. “Our role is to listen to you, carry your voices, and amplify them where you may not reach.” In her remarks, Laura Nyirinkindi, Member of the @UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls, emphasized the critical role of lived experiences in shaping global human rights advocacy. She highlighted that the Working Group exists to engage directly with women, understand intersecting forms of discrimination, including disability, and use this evidence to hold governments accountable and push for meaningful change. Encouraging participants to speak out, she underscored that every story, barrier, and lived reality shared contributes to influencing policies, strengthening protections, and advancing dignity and equality for women and girls everywhere. Women with disabilities continue to face barriers to justice, legal information, and protection from gender-based violence. Through the “𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔” 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕, FIDA-Uganda is strengthening the capacity of women with disabilities to serve as Community Legal Volunteers and bridge the gap between marginalized communities and formal justice systems. Supported by the Gender Equality Innovation Fund, GEIF, through @CrossroadsIntl, this dialogue creates space for women Community Legal Volunteers from Arua and Kampala to share their lived experiences directly with @UN gender equality duty-bearers and shape advocacy for more inclusive justice systems. ✨ #GEIFProject #Inclusion

To commemorate Women’s Month, and mark the start of Sexual Awareness Month, the FIDA-Uganda @Makerere Student Chapter hosted the 𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐀-𝐌𝐔𝐊 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓. 🤝 Under the theme “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒆𝒔” the get together emphasized the need to sustain conversations on issues affecting women and to keep raising awareness on key prevailing issues. It brought together members of the chapter and affiliated chapters for dialogue, networking, and shared learning on women’s rights and advocacy. A lot was learnt and life-long connections were formed. One thing that remained distinct is that it's through our conversations that movements are sparked and it's through our questions that change is driven for. ✨ Supported by @unwomenuganda, @EUinUG, @NLinUganda under @GlobalSpotlight through the HER Access: SRHR & SGBV Response project. #FIDAULeadershipAcademy
