when i was in thailand i met a dorky and fairly unattractive guy who told me that he’d never had a match on a dating app back home, but suddenly he had tons of matches from thai women. he seemed incredibly confused and asked if i was having the same experience. i was actually having the opposite experience, but this was fine bc i did not want to date thai men. it’s well-known that white guys are attractive to asian women, and i think this is about more than just the status of being from a wealthy country, white guys are on average more masculine than asian men. white women, however, are less feminine than asian women, which is unappealing. i think that these cultural differences in femininity/masculinity levels explain most cross-cultural dating preferences.

Dear Publishers, I think I speak for many, many people when I say we want books that are NOT - grim detective, argh a serial killer - Lady Petunia’s engagement to Lord Broxbourne and also the hot stable boy - yet another retelling of some Greek/Roman myth (how many are there?!) - a long winded trilogy about some medievalish sort of war - sad girl clean minimalist plant NYC - zap bam boom war vet helicopter - The scyosiwns are fighting the gleiwodjrn in rgosiekforo - nothing happens in a normal Moroccan family for 3 generations Give me drama, give me immersion, give me suspense, give me a good old fashioned gothic epic where I actually care about what’s happening. I am getting to the point where EVERY book I pick up is one of the above.

Lizzo is spot on here. Social media is where most digital marketing happens, and the pivot from chronological feeds to algorithmic has massively impacted an artist’s ability to reach and leverage their audience. Even if you boost a post, followers aren’t seeing it.

Lana Wachowski on the philosophy of "Bound" (1996) & whether the Lesbian theme helped the movie: "Interviewer: Do you think the lesbian theme ultimately helped or hindered the film? Wachowski: From a commercial standpoint? Interviewer: Yes. Wachowski: For whatever it was, it was about lesbians and we weren't going to change it. People asked us to change it. People at other studios would read the script and say, "If you change Corky to a man we're really interested." And we were like, well, that movie's been made a million times, so we're really not interested in it. And in terms of the movie overall, we think it works pretty well. (...) Interviewer: Was that the philosophy of the movie? You know, you mentioned all those great directors of the past. They all had a philosophy. What was your philosophy? @Plastician Good read. As much as I hate “gatekeepers” things like pirate radio and the clubs were decent barometers for whether artists were able to cut the mustard. There was no faking it and you had to show talent and hard work to get to the next level. These days there are no levels.

every "journeyman" type craft/skill whether it's being a performer or photographer or programmer or marketer or video editor or business owner has this problem now. so many people think and willingly believe that you can compress decades of experience into days. everything is easier now and we have access to information and incredible tools but you'll still need masterful experience to think on your feet. i dunno im just rambling at this point and there's probably a connection to be made here with how we're learning (ie: deskilling) with AI. either way great article.
