In reality it doesn’t work that way sha… Because now, your standard of living has increased Before you even get there, when you match, you get paid $50-70k (which is very low. You will hardly survive well on this) for 3 years during your residency depending on how long it is. When you finish, the realistic is about $220k- depending on your speciality If you want to go for fellowship that’s another extra 3 years of minimum wage. By the time you’re out, life might be a bit better but your standard of living had gone up. You’ll go from a $30/month to a $3,000 per month for accomodation Your feeding goes from $100/month to $1,500/month So also does a lot of thing. Then the higher you earn, the more taxes you pay You might pay about 40% on tax, then you pay car & house insurances, then practice insurance… Being a doctor can make you comfortable but NOT RICH

Once you Match after your USMLE journey you have eliminated poverty from your bloodline. From less than 1k$ to 300k$

@JeffClarkUS Stop politicising healthcare . You aren’t well equipped mentally and academically to determine how that field should be run . Honestly those spots are unwanted by US grads , also it’s a matter of competence not nationality.

HHS should create a regulation providing that no U.S. hospital can lawfully accept a foreign residency applicant until all U.S. residency applicants first have slots. No hospital or educational entity accepting federal funds should see its funding continue if it offers foreigners residency slots over U.S.-born residents. It’s ridiculous we don’t already have such a system. So much of America before Trump has been allowed to lapse into a “Foreigners First” system. It has to change.
Mary Talley Bowden MD@MaryBowdenMD

Over the past 10 years, the US has seen a steady rise in foreign medical students taking US student residency spots. Every year, 1000+ US medical students fail to match, while 6000+ FMGs do match. About half of unmatched students find a spot, but they must still compete with FMGs for the leftover positions, leaving 500 - 600 US medical students with a worthless medical degree.

@elon_not_musk_ @_iamsamani Ah ? in a world of xenophobia and many countries finding many reasons to cut down on immigration , just don’t set yourself up for it . See, ppl will raise “ reasonable “ concerns as to why IMgs should be cut off .ppl who aren’t part of ur journey won’t understand . Okay smart .

@DrSerunjogiEmma @MaryBowdenMD Doc foreigners really under estimate the relevance of just winning in silence . You are already a targeted minority , you don’t make matters worse for yourself .the USA will start adopting laws like UK making residency entry tougher . Smh smh

@MaryBowdenMD Medicine should be a discipline without DEI, let the best candidate win. If that candidate is a US resident, good and if not, it is also fine. The best are needed to save life

@MaryBowdenMD American hospitals should be banned from accepting foreign graduates as long as there are any unmatched US medical school graduates And for the record, there are more US medical school graduates than there are US residency positions available

150+ students from ONE medical school in Pakistan matched into the US this cycle… This could easily be Uganda 🇺🇬 Uganda graduates ~700–900 doctors/year, but only a tiny fraction (<10) match into the US annually. That’s not a capacity problem …it’s a systems + exposure problem. The difference is clear: 🇵🇰 Schools have structured USMLE pipelines 🇺🇬 Most students start late, confused, or unsupported Medical students need exposure early on…

An incredibly emotional and proud moment to be a KEMCOLIAN. Nearly half of those matched are from my own batch, and it fills my heart to say I’ve witnessed their journeys up close. I’ve seen friends quietly struggle while juggling multiple jobs just to keep their dreams alive.

@MaryBowdenMD Going to med sch in usa doesn’t automatically mean you’re fully prepared to become a resident . There are bad nuts there too . I’d rather an IMG. Who’s competent take care of me than a usa grad who couldn’t match . No emotions here , my health important than your debt sis
