@oliemack I think a lot of the reception around AI could be boiled down to, "Does the ends justify the means?" For many the answer is no. It's not worth the water usage, surging prices, or existential worry about the job market. LLMs are cool in a vacuum but don't exist in one.

People have lost sight of what an amazing accomplishment LLMs are. When I first used GPT-3, I had a moment of wonder: a computer is responding intelligently to natural language in natural language. And I was using the original Curie/Davinci model variants that weren’t even instruction tuned - they functioned primarily as autocomplete. These models fundamentally changed how I thought about technology from that point onwards. If we keep up our guard and only look for failures, we can lose track of how amazing the technology is, and how striking its pace of improvement has been. Capabilities acceleration that would be stupefyingly fast in other fields is often brushed off. Just this week a model that is arguably superintelligent at computer security research (and likely many other tasks) has been announced, a difficult-to-fathom development that many people are a bit dull to. We are currently possibly in something that looks like a singularity - AI models accelerating AI development - and it hasn't been remarked on widely outside of specialist press. Have people lost their sense of how ridiculous this is? Or am I mistaken? It sometimes feels like in trying to slot LLMs in the same bucket as a crypto token or new phone, we dramatically undersell their significance. For good or for bad.

@BluebriarArts On the other hand, the instructor should make their class worth coming to. If you can excel in the course without attending - why does attendance matter? That's not refusing to engage or participate, it's acknowledging your time is valuable and can be spent elsewhere.

@carygolomb The consistent upward creep of subscription prices is the specter that looms over all of these services. I understand that price creep is something we're seeing across the industry, but if you choose not to buy a $70 game, at least your pre-existing library is accessible.

In the past few days Xbox has: Raised the price of GamePass, raising the barrier to entry into the GamePass ecosystem And also Created a free ad-supported Xbox Cloud gaming entry point, significantly lowering the barrier to entry. Everyone hates both

@carygolomb I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I'd argue phones do have more general utility in the average person's day to day than a gaming focused handheld. Regardless, both are too expensive.

@AerondTargaryen @Rexkinsm @kishswim Most people I've discussed this topic with don't dislike power scaling conceptually, they dislike when it becomes so contrived the story suffers for it. Having infinitely stronger-er villains is not a sustainable structure for a story.

@Rexkinsm @kishswim Still baffles me that some people who like shounen manga don't like 'power scaling'. They really want the main character to just have stagnant progressions with zero stake.

@zebulobotomy It's neat and has a lot of detail, but the older spherical Death Star iterations were significantly more charming.

@carygolomb At that price point it's starting to compete with decent performance gaming laptops that are much more powerful. Feels like they're really banking on the novelty of these new features on a handheld.

@carygolomb @CallMeFlake @Shrev64 @K__Med Honestly even if Infamous had driveable vehicles I don't think there'd be a reason to use them for traversal. Just like Prototype. Verticality is so important to those games and once your moveset is fleshed out vehicles would become irrelevant a la Saints Row 4

@CallMeFlake @Shrev64 @K__Med Can't* drive anything in infamous 1 or 2. How can you have an open world game and not have drivable vehicles? Lol, iirc it was because "he uses electricity and that would make the cars explode" Anyhoo, if you liked Infamous more, then cool.

@theanimatedmind That's a very very small window to view that entire interaction that Piccolo had with Goku. Especially considering Goku didn't actually act until after Piccolo finished expressing his stance. Gohan has unleashed his hidden power many times due to rage without a "plan".

@firetemper Goku wasn't convinced by that. He responded to Piccolo asking him if he told Gohan his plan (which was crucial to success) and to Piccolo saying he was about to jump in the fight. Piccolo was not reasonable. He branded Gohan a scared child unable to fight and win which was false.

@theanimatedmind Whether you want to argue Goku's interpretation of Gohan's emotional state is one of ignorance or dismissal, he's still in the wrong here and Piccolo's response is a reasonable one.

@theanimatedmind The basis for Piccolo's argument is that Gohan is a child who was sent out to fight a monster by his father and put through unimaginable suffering in the process. An argument that Goku is shown to be convinced by.

@theanimatedmind I never said that Goku believed Gohan was exactly like him. Simply that Goku didn't take into account or otherwise understand anything regarding Gohan's mental / emotional state. Goku does eventually come to understand the reality of the position he put Gohan in.

@firetemper I'd agree if Goku ever showed he believed Gohan liked fighting the way he does as opposed to simply having an accurate assessment of Gohan's abilities. He only ever forced on his potential/abilities: when we first met Gohan, when he told him to fight Vegeta, and with Cell.

@carygolomb Hey, uh, Microsoft? You can't quite be the publishing powerhouse you seem to want to be if you close down all of your studios. Amazing that they were allowed to consolidate so much only to destroy it.

@TrowGundam @carygolomb There's a couple problems with this take for various reasons. 1.) Games aren't only taken offline because studios are shuttered. 2.) Going into development first with the idea that the game needs to be accessible later is different than a retroactive application 1/2

Agreed. It should be mandatory that IF a live service game is officially going offline and the company that made it will no longer be commercially selling it, all of the backend software should be made available so that anyone could create a server on their own.
JoCat@JoCat105

Games should give you the tools to continue to play them if/when they get shut down. You should keep access to the product you paid for.
