My book exists! I advise you to place advance orders now, while first edition stocks last; in fact, best to do all your Christmas shopping today, with one bulk order. Thank you to everyone at @Harvard_Press, especially @IanMalcolm10, and to all who helped me along the way.

Joe Kloc's amazing poem, "82 Sentences, Each Taken from the ‘Last Statement’ of a Person Executed by the State of Texas Since 1984," is a cento + documentary form + archival history that feels like a poem of witness. A docu-cento? A must-read. nybooks.com/articles/2024/…

Fred Schauer Has Passed, lsolum.typepad.com/legaltheory/20…: It is with a heavy heart that I report that Fred Schauer passed yesterday, Sunday, the first of September, 2024.  I have known Fred for almost forty years. At the very beginning of my academic career, Fred provided comments on my very first law review--an act of great kindness and intellectual generosity.  One of my most important scholarly projects, the development of virtue jurisprudence, originated with a paper I wrote that responded to a paper of Fred's. Throughout my career, I have consulted Fred's work again and again on multitudinous topics. He is one of the greats, a scholarly giant and a wonderful human being.  He is irreplaceable and his loss is a heavy blow that will be felt far beyond the University of Virginia.

My husband, Paul Darling, passed away suddenly & unexpectedly on the 2nd August. He was a dynamo: clever, fiercely proud of his roots in South Shields, determined to help those who, as he did, sought a career in the Law without connections. He leaves a huge gap.

@MWHoyle19 Thanks. I've not thought about this for a while and certainly not in this context. I agree with your sentiment but am not sure how to craft the right rule to save the right cases

I’m sceptical that it requires subsidy of planning permission JRs against the government on “landscape” or other aesthetic objections. @fjwilmotsmith has written about Aarhus, so this may be of interest.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Daniel Dennett, who served as an advisory editor for Boston Review in the 1980s. With characteristic wit and charm, here he is reviewing Robert Nozick’s Philosophical Explanations: bostonreview.net/articles/philo…

In a fascinating book called "Equal Justice", @fjwilmotsmith argues for a fair legal system along the lines of the UK National Health Service ("National Legal Service"), where one's access to quality legal representation does not depend upon wealth. hup.harvard.edu/books/97806742…

I was so lucky to be able to have Danny Kahneman as a best friend and collaborator for decades. He usually ended our conversations with "to be continued..." but I now have to simulate his part which is impossible. My favorite image of us "working".
