@DavidOsmond8 for that final ~2-4%, when that crosses paths with multi-day renewable deserts - what do you think we should do then? snowy can cover 2.2GW for 7 days but whats your energy preference for the back up after that? gas turbines? something else?

Within a few years, the NEM will have 45GW/200GWh of storage, excluding anything from Snowy2.0. My weekly simultion assumes much less than this - 24GW/120GWh & reaches 98% renewable. The 2026 Draft ISP assumes 44GW/202GWh excluding Snowy2.0 & is 96% renewable by FY2040. /1

@EricLDaugh this is a retarded economic policy. theres no property taxes in aus, just stamp duty and the total cost of ownership is 2-4x more. the holding tax reduces prices

🚨 JUST IN: Gov. Ron DeSantis is OFFICIALLY moving to abolish property taxes for Florida homeowners but wants to make sure New Yorkers who FLEE the DAY AFTER it passes can't exploit the system "Should someone from New York be able to move the DAY AFTER the election and not pay?! They should pay for a time! Why would we want to incentivize that?" You should be able to OWN your home rent-free from the government! The first state to do this will be HEROES 🇺🇸

@peter_tulip @AntipodeanMacro Metro melb as unlimited flat space out west to build. Syd, SEQ are landlocked. VIC has also scared investors out of investing which has also dampened demand. This two tier combo has slowed down price growth.

Melbourne used to be the 2nd most expensive housing market in the country. It's been overtaken by Brisbane, Perth and Canberra. Now Melbourne dwelling prices are below average. Because it has been building lots of homes. Chart by @AntipodeanMacro

Aust Govt is right to address intergen equity. The top 3 ways to do this though are: 1/ cut gov spending & deregulate to take pressure off inflation 2/ raise the GST & slash income tax 3/ get the housing balance right - lower immigration and make it easier to supply more homes

“Stamp duty is...the worst tax on the statute books.” It punishes those who want to move, locks people into homes that no longer suit them, and makes housing less efficient. In other words, bad policy with real consequences. In this discussion, Adam Creighton and Tom Clougherty break down one of the most misunderstood parts of the tax system: capital gains tax and whether it should exist at all. 📺 More: bit.ly/4tJBwNl

@TheKouk Retail prices will never fall. The distributions costs become more concentrated on a shrinking pool of retail buyers as more people move to Solar and whilst the marginal cost to produce falls with grid batteries the distribution costs still increase

@MarkDiStef welcome to countries are fine. they're entirely ceremonial mark of respect. its the acknowledgement of country in BAU meetings that are awful. no joke, melbourne law school routinely did acknowledgements of country in zoom calls, like wtf

New analysis from me: In just seven years, the NDIS blew out to four times its projected cost. I have never seen anything like this in a public spending program, and it brought Labor to an uncomfortable and controversial reckoning this week.

@waitbutwhy If this is game theory the dominant strategy is press the red button. not sure why anyone would pick blue. and yet 277 votes in 72.2% of people have. LOL

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@TheKouk Peter Tulip knows what every economist with a brain knows. All the 5% deposit has done is transfer more capital from young people to boomers by raising prices, left younger people in more debt, all whilst delivering no additional supply.

The aim of the scheme was to get people to switch from renters to home owners. The data strongly support this. A hugely successful policy - it worked and at a very low cost to the govt. If prices in lower cohorts underperformed, it would be a worry.
Peter Tulip@peter_tulip

The 5% deposit guarantee has increased prices. Both sides need to learn from this mistake. Boosting demand is a counter-productive approach to housing affordability. For the Coalition, this means super-for-housing should wait until supply is increased. abc.net.au/news/2026-04-2…

Twenty years ago yesterday, the Howard government paid off Australia's national debt entirely. This month, that debt crossed $999 billion. Seven in ten Australians say they are worried about where this ends, as projections estimate a continual rise throughout the next decade. Link to article in comments below.
