The number of people failing to recognize that this is not an issue for the son, more of an issue for the grandchildren, is alarming. Also, the grandparents have a Reddit account where they seek the validation of redditors. Major red flag.
I wouldn’t call the grandparents assholes. I’d call them cowards. They should have immediately called their son.
Establishing a tradition as a family and then breaking it is no small ask, especially when it comes to children. They knew he’d be disappointed and they put it off. Depending on what the structure of the summer vacation is, this could be the middle of it, making this a significant planning issue. Not insurmountable, but definitely annoying.
That being said, the son is an apple of the same tree. I wouldn’t call him an asshole either.
