Born to a government official in British India, his childhood was a nomadic journey through North India that deeply influenced the diverse settings of his later works. After completing his BA at Vidyasagar college,Kolkata, he moved to Patna to study law at his father’s behest. He soon began practicing at the Jalpaiguri District Court, however, 'courtroom drama' was not his true calling. Realizing his practice was not particularly flourishing, he left the legal profession and moved to Bombay to work as a screenwriter for Bombay Talkies under Himanshu Rai.
In 1932, a short detective story, 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘸𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘪,written for the Bengali Basumati magazine would eventually alter the course of his life, leading him to become one of the most successful writers of his time and beyond. This was Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, the creator of the legendary "truth seeker," Byomkesh Bakshi. With 32 Byomkesh stories, along with his celebrated historical novels and ghost stories, Sharadindu Babu remains the definitive Indian answer to the world famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes. On this day in 1899, he was born.
