“Dear Lord, if this is really what’s happening, what can we do about it?” The Christ smiled. “The same thing the farmer does when the river floods his fields. Try to save the seed..Don Camillo, you have to help those who still have faith & keep it intact” #DonCamillo #Guareschi

Coworker is having a real dilemma. $1 for the tooth fairy seems too low, $5 seems way too high. What's a parent to do these days?

@booksandbbq I read it aloud once. The prose is dreadful when you can’t fly through it. Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked together down the shifting staircase. Ron stopped for a moment, stricken. Harry and Hermione looked back at him. What is it, Ron?” gasped Hermione. “My rat!” moaned Ron..

@jyjc_ @moultano I do wonder if it's possible to have it be shaded in summer and unshaded in winter. That tends to be more above and less south though.

So many people designing outdoor spaces seem to have a kindergartner's understanding of how the sun works. In the northern hemisphere, shade goes north as much as it goes down. Do not put sun shades above the target, put them south of it. They aren't umbrellas.

@MargoinWNC Imagine the squealing if the court outlawed the “not a union” teachers’ union and capped non-teaching positions at 15% of total salary outlays, to prioritize classroom instruction?

Why does everything have to be cartooned? The old Johnny Tremain book on the left (and by old, I mean my copy is from the 90s; the new cover on the right). I pulled it out for my teens to read (it’s a classic that all of mine read for American history) and noticed the new cover amzn.to/3NXrubK is very juvenile.

JUST IN: In a 4-3 decision, the state Supreme Court tosses out Leandro lawsuit. "The people did not vest the judicial branch with the power to resolve policy disputes between the other branches of government or to set education policy," majority writes. #ncpol

@SurrealistShip It’s a fairly challenging thought experiment to even come up with an issue on which Kagan would dissent and fail to persuade any one of her colleagues from different wings of the court.

When its 1 Justice Vs 8 Thomas: Some rant about how framework we've used since 1902 is wrong Alito: Some right wing culture war issue he's seething with anger about the result being bad Barrett: A meticulous treatise threading a needle that convinces nobody Gorsuch: Some weird deep issue beautifully explained the court deals with 20 years later Kavanaugh: A boring split on a technicality of procedure. Roberts: The majority opinion erodes the Court's legitimacy and should reconsider Kagan: A logic trap showing they can't have their cake in this and eat it too in another recent case Sotomayor: Some deeply humanizing background on the person whos life the majority ruined Jackson: Here's a brand new framework for the law that arrives at the societally just answer
𝖓𝖎𝖓𝖊 🕯@atlanticesque

Remember, if Kagan joins a Sotomayor/Jackson opinion, it’s likely at least plausible. If Kagan declines to join a Sotomayor/Jackson opinion, it’s definitely insane. And if *Sotomayor* declines to join a *Jackson* opinion, you’re in for a real treat.

My wife likes to take random assortments of my books and create what she believes to be aesthetically-pleasing display shelves. I despair of these hodge-podge shelves but it’s a trade off necessary to save the shelves from being populated by picture frames.

Chuck Dixon on why The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is so bad: "What Amazon is doing to Tolkien is an abomination. The people doing the work obviously don’t understand the original work. They are adding elements that are very 2022 to it that five years from now are going to appear laughable. They’re taking a timeless tale and setting it basically in our contemporary zeitgeist. And it’s just wrong." How right is he?

@SeanTrende 60 Mike Castles would pass all manner of harmful legislation and kill good legislation & nominations. 40 Rubios plus 20 Castles is a mixed bag but a very different thing.

Mark Levin said in 2010 that he would rather have 40 Marco Rubio‘s than 60 Mike castles, and that attitude, repeated across various factions on the right, is more or less why the GOP hasn’t had continuous Senate control since 2012.
unseen1@unseen1_unseen

Yeap, people need to learn to pick their battles better. Unseat Cornyn with Paxton. Replace Tillis with a better gop senator. Win the MI, OH, and NH open seats. Maybe let collins and murcowski lose. Replace McConnell with an actual republican. Do these things and maybe the caucus will move right.

Cancelling Harry Potter because of Rowling but remaking/doing spin offs of Narnia and LOTR despite Lewis and Tolkien being two of the most prominent Christian figures of the last century who undoubtedly share Rowling’s views she’s been cancelled for. Make it make sense.

Guys, Roche being made Patron of Malta at 76 is not a demotion or humiliation. He's retiring. Patron/Master posts are typically given to Cardinals at or near retirement age. We need to stop looking at what happened to Burke (well before retirement) as a precident for the future.
