I’ve been watching the Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution, and it is hands down the most remarkable documentary I’ve ever seen. What keeps hitting me over and over is just how different the culture was in that era. The toughest fighters/ athletes we glorify today could not compare to the average man back then, their grit, their endurance, their willingness to suffer for something bigger than themselves. Their baseline for hardship was a level most people alive today couldn’t even process. Think about what those soldiers actually did. Picture marching from Massachusetts to Long Island in freezing conditions, starving, injured, sleep-deprived, with part of your arm blown off and one working eye and still stepping into the front line of a war built on an idea you knew you’d never live long enough to see fully realized. That level of conviction and will power is almost unimaginable today.
