i ended up getting this baby tent called the joovy gloo. it’s technically not approved for infant sleep but not for legitimate safety reasons, just for government incompetence reasons. it’s small enough that we packed it and could still fit all of our other stuff in the same suitcase. so far it’s working great and an upside we hadn’t anticipated is that it’s super easy to move around in the airbnb, which has been helpful as we deal with jet lag. it seems to be sold out most places but the kidco peapod looks similar. it will be great for things like the beach and camping too bc it’s UPF 50 and zips shut to protect against bugs. it’s big enough for a toddler.

I have been driven mad trying to find a suitable travel crib for my baby. the one everyone says to get is still the size of a backpack. this is not that small. I want something that easily fits in a suitcase. I was confused about why tf this doesn't exist and it turns out the answer is, of course, the government. the consumer product safety commission keeps making the regulations on cribs more and more stringent, effectively making it impossible to actually sell something compact. one might think "okay but this is probably good, surely their regulations are important?" no! you are mistaken about how the government operates! the newest mandates say that cribs must have four freestanding legs and a raised sleep surface. this actually has nothing to do with the safety of a crib when used normally, and everything to do with making it impossible for parents to use the crib atop a bed. couldn't you just tell people to only use the crib on the floor? yes! in a sane world, you could just sell products with instructions like this. in fact, in almost all instances this is what we do. my baby's bouncer is only supposed to be used on the floor. my car should only be operated by a sober, licensed adult with eyes. but for some reason, the government will not let me buy a portable crib that would be 100% safe when used on the floor, which is undeniably the normal place to put a crib. ironically, a lot of parents were like "sure there are no portable cribs, that's why I just cosleep when I travel! or I just make a nest out of towels and put my baby in a drawer!" both of which are a lot more dangerous than a portable crib used on the floor.

the terrifying reality is that everyone on here is by definition at least a tiny bit interested and invested in reading and/or writing. this is where the people who enjoy text gather. this is where the most literate of us are massed. and it leads to constant arguments

Yes and: Millenials having children late locks Boomers-Millenials into this eternal parent-child relationship Being 45 w/ your 1st graduating HS necessarily puts you in a diff place mentally vs being 45 w/ a kindergartner Deeply underrated macro dynamic
Justin Slaughter@JBSDC

I have a working thesis that part of why culture is stuck is that the Boomers refusing to leave the stage means we’re still all playing our generations roles in the culture from 20 years ago. Everyone is still living in 2006 socially even as we all have two more decades of age.

Grocery stores be like…here’s an uncooked whole chicken. It’s $10.99. We also have whole rotisserie cooked chickens for $7.99. Oh, are they like way smaller or taste really bad or something? No, they’re fall off the bone good. Absolutely perfectly done.

@MovieFiend51 @SashoTodorov1 The Your Wrong About series on OJ/Nicole is a devastating deep dive into how Nicole was failed in life by the LAPD, so the fact that they failed her even in death is salt in the wound

@SashoTodorov1 Of course there was racism in that investigation and, agreed, they framed a guilty man. But the cops (not Fuhrman, no, but cops) let him slide on beating up Nicole MANY times. His race didn't matter. It was money & fame. Then they couldn't let him slide anymore and screwed it up

@jo77559834 @MikeMcBooger @Tulipspeculator @Acyn Some states (CA, MA, ME etc) have made good strides there, but I don’t think rounds of subsidies are always sustainable. I liked the model of LFS because it was designed as a market catalyst. Philanthropy is filling some of the gap, but much more fair market catalysts are needed.

Mockler on Cost of Iran War: So in New York, they did free school lunches for $300 million a year, put that against the $50 billion, which is a conservative estimate for this war. We could have funded this across the country. How about in Connecticut? They have paid family leave. It was $450 million a year. And it is $5 million to start up. Put that against the $50 billion. It is a no brainer. What about one more in New Mexico. It costs $1.5 billion for free college. We could do that 20 times over with the $50 billion that we've spent.

@jo77559834 @MikeMcBooger @Tulipspeculator @Acyn I had several convos w some of RFK’s people in 2025. I was deeply disappointed that RFK did not do more to stop the admin from cancelling the Local Food for Schools program, leaving thousands of good farmers on the $ hook and preventing good food from getting on the tray.

@framzzzzzz @MikeMcBooger @Tulipspeculator @Acyn Good on you. That is great. I cringe when looking at the sugar and sodium contents of some of the foods marketed to kids. Dems hate RFK jr, but I think he is doing a great job shining a light on the importance of better food and physical activity.

@jo77559834 @MikeMcBooger @Tulipspeculator @Acyn Totally agree. A lot of my work is getting more local/organic food in K12. The main barrier is unfair market practices by large distributors, manufacturers and foodservice companies which could be fixed by enforcement of existing antitrust laws. Redesigning meal patterns too.

@JamesSurowiecki @McAuleyGer @Authw8 Mines, forests, encomiendas/haciendas, it was like the largest enslavement in history! The conquistadors’ atrocities were so extreme that it caused fiery debate with the crown and public back home, too. The conqs were def not good guys.

i feel like nobody knows how to read this movie. the basic idea is we spend the whole movie getting madder and madder at the maya for what they did to this guy and his family. then suddenly at the end the spanish show up and we realize they're about to do the same exact shit on a much greater scale. it's an anti-colonialism movie from a very non-woke perspective, which people think is a contradiction for some reason
from death to death transfigured@BODY_W0_WHORGAN

Insane for Mel Gibson to make like this INCREDIBLY racist movie for like 99% of it only to sort of pull the rug and be like 'yeah what comes immediately after this is so much fucking worse' with one shot

@McAuleyGer @Authw8 The Spanish engaged in torture, slavery, rape, and large scale massacres, so I wouldn’t call them good in any sense. The Aztecs were also clearly violent assholes. There are no good guys between the two.

when I reflect on my own childhood experiences I don’t think I particularly minded the specifics of my parents’ attempts at control or “bribery” or even punishment it was more of an ecological thing about attunement, listening, caring, presence

i understand why ppl do small talk when they are first meeting someone, but why do some ppl do compulsive small talk all the time? my MIL just by default talks nonstop. “do you think all of that will fit in that suitcase? i always check my suitcase, don’t want to be lifting it on the plane. i take it to the gate and check it there. they let you check it for free!” “uber is here! last time i took an uber it was a prius. hard to get ubers at my house, have to call ahead.” “i talked to margaret. did i tell you that? she called me. she’s getting ready to go to the airport. 2pm fight for her. but she’s flying domestic. gets in in the evening.” but like basically nonstop for hours. never anything that needs to be said, always just kinda autobiographical and impossible to respond to with anything other than “mmmm.” it is very much the same as someone following me around with a television playing nonstop ads, but if i don’t kinda pay attention to the ads i am rude. not only can i now not have a normal conversation with my fiancé, i cannot even have interesting thoughts in my own mind.
