The Searle Room is a thought experiment where we consider the effect of putting Searle in a room, and have him communicate with an observer familiar with Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment by slipping papers under the room door. The experiment shows that Searle does not possess consciousness because it demonstrates there is nothing Searle can say to the observer to convince them he is conscious.

I did, indeed. If we'd sign up early enough to get one of limited spots. What I did not have was a real estate there. And I did not have access to the property expensive hotels and luxury resorts. Because they were reserved for the Party people. Which is why exactly what I said.

Notice how he system-prompts the context of the conversation. Do you think Claude does not have knowledge about Senator Bernie Sanders views on all these topics? Notice how he explicitly creates the narrative link from data collection to AI, even though DoubleClick has been doing all of this for decades before Attention Is All You Need paper was released. Notice how carefully he avoids the part about the US government data collection on Americans, and the mass surveillance NSA and other three letter acronyms have been doing for decades before that same paper came out. But yes, let us pretend that this was not a carefully staged propaganda video to create emotional framework based on fear where genuine threats to our privacy that have existed before AI are positioned as novel emergent AI dangers in order to further his agenda. The alternative is that Sen Sanders strongly believes that AI is advanced enough that it should be involved I. The US political discourse as a participant on its own.

This doesn’t prove it’s a bubble, but if these systems were in fact intelligent in the sense and to the degree that many proponents claim, they would obviously be able to write decent brainfuck without having seen it before.

Ok so let me get this straight. SHOCKING: frontier LLMs suck at writing in esoteric languages. Things like... brainfuck and whitespace? STOP THE PRESSES, STOP THE VCS, IT'S A BUBBLE Brainfuckbench is cute, but this is hardly an indictment of the frontier models' capabilities.

Ditched boring flat maps forever.
